Kiffin did it to USCw for sure. USCw was paying him when Alabama beat them like 52-6 or whatever in that opening game.
I think it's basically what everyone does. But I do remember Kiffin for sure because I would tease USCw fans about it.

Another couple things is attendance numbers are down and a lot people are choosing to stay home and watch on TV.

Per ESPN, Kiffin was making something like $700k per season at Alabama when he was first hired. He got a raise to $1.4m per year prior to the 2016 season and that game vs USC.
That seems like a normal salary for a coordinator at that time. Per Bleacher Report, the highest paid OC in the SEC at the time was Cam Cameron at $1.5M, followed by Brian Schottenheimer at $950k.
It appears as though Kiffin made more than his predecessor, Doug Nussmeier, was making as the Alabama OC.
Maybe he took a discount but it didn't look to be a big one.
