Should the NCAA make students be enrolled for 1 year before they play?

OK to participate in practice, but couldn't play until they have completed 2 semesters at the school.
I'm not sure if it would hold up to legal challenge, but it would help fix some serious issues.
Will Wade isn't getting Euro pros if that's the rule.
Harder to poach players from other schools.
Its not great, I'd love to hear any better suggestions.

The C in NCAA stands for collegiate.
Not Central Europe.

They used to do this several decades ago (only sophomore and up could play, freshman played JV).

Seems drastic to not allow Freshmen to play

The inventors of the Euro Step.
Nobody asked for it.

Imagine Pete Maravich's numbers if he could've played his freshman year.
And no, this is not the answer to our problems.

No? They used to do this (if you were a true freshman) until the late 70s.

I don't see the point of hypothetical rules you absolutely know will get an immediate injunction and then the courts will just strike down. If the NCAA makes a rule these days, you know they are likely to just get smacked down. It is whack a mole with a judge's gavel.

Yeah NCAA reinstated freshman eligibility for varsity teams in 1972.
Big Blue History has a pretty decent history on Kentucky’s JV teams.
Freshman/JV teams - Big Blue History

Is there a legal reason why you can’t set an age maximum? Other leagues have age limitations.
Eligibility should end on a player’s 24th birthday.

I'm not sure it would get struck down. Students (even freshmen) could still get NIL It doesn't prevent them from making money. Seems like a school should be able to say who can play on their team.
(Maybe all students get place on probation until they have 30 hours and at least a 2.5GPA. Then forbid students from playing while on probation.)
I know it sucks (It would be bad for LSU baseball) but I can't think of any other way to change the direction of college sports.
More than likely, I'll either need to embrace the new normal or give up on college sports.

Simple question for the courts. Identical athletes. One is able to play, one prohibited from playing. Which will be paid more in NIL? Seems pretty obvious the one who is allowed to play will earn more meaning that rule limits the earning potential of the athlete. The courts have been pretty consistent in how they treat rules that arbitrarily limit earnings.

That is what the 5 for 5 rule will do. The clock starts when a player either graduates high school or turns 19, whichever is earlier. Then they have 5 consecutive years of eligibility. It has been approved, they are debating how to implement it. It will look like:
Year 1: age 18/19
Year 2: age 19/20
Year 3: age 20/21
Year 4: age 21/22
Year 5: age 22/23
Then they will be out of eligibility.
