For me, Tennessee-Alabama. Imagine telling someone back in 1992 they’d never face each other in a title game

Florida-LSU is another. And they’ve both been good at the same time, just never crossed paths

I fully believe that, when the divisions were first set up, Alabama/Tennessee was the primary target matchup in the minds of the decision makers. Strange that it never happened.

Just weird timing and happenstance is all.

No one could have predicted in 1990 that Steve Spurrier was going to turn Florida into the juggernaut that it became. His Gators were a constant thorn in the side of Phillip Fulmer and the Vols. By the time Spurrier left for the NFL in January 2002, Alabama was about to be on major NCAA probation and Tennessee was about to begin their long decline into a period of genuine irrelevance.

By the time Alabama emerged from its punishment in 2008 (its first full recruiting class without sanctions in half a decade), Tennessee was cooked.

unlike Tennessee; they have held up their end of the bargain in being a perennial SECCG contender

Yes we shouldve played for it more times but we also played Spurrier, Stallings, Urban, Saban, and Kirby every year the last 34 years. Thats not easy. At least we almost gave Bama the Death penalty, all LSU has ever done is have Milroe run a train on them

I don't think UGA and Auburn met in the SECCG either.

Which tells you that those big six in-season permanent cross-div games were huge in terms of impact on path to the title game.

It was the last meaningful football game Auburn played in… and they lost. It’s going on a decade since they played a meaningful game.
