No one pouring money into the program cares about player development (or who graduates) beyond what leads to winning. Fans and the PTB would rather Tommy Touchdown have a Tim Tebow college career than a Patrick Mahomes NFL career. Your players could all become Rhodes Scholars, NFL All-Pros, and Ward Cleavers, but if you’re not winning enough, no one cares and you will be a fired arse.

I like Saban but the absurd salaries and perks of being a major college head coach are part of the problem with the sport and contributed to what we have now.

College football is 99% a business and entertainment entity. The coaches took advantage of that for years, and now the players are too.

Even if he did it didn't mean he was scared. Everytime rules changed to hurt what Nick did best, he adapted and still won. He did it over and over. The guy was 72 years and had already won 7 NC's. He didn't feel like going through a new change and having to adapt again, he'd already been there and done that. If he were ten years younger, he would have stayed in the game, adapted and won more national championships. That's what winners do.

I tend to agree. Yes Saban was 72 but that’s not why he ran.

So the players only being concerned about NIL pay isn't what Saban meant when he said NIL was a major reason for him to retire?

Saban's retirement was timed perfectly with his age what it was at the same time Bama and GA were not going to be the only ones in the SEC paying big NIL anymore.

If my profession gets a complete fundamental overhaul when I’m 72 I’ll probably cut and run too.
