It's inevitably going to happen. Might as well just cut to the chase and do it.
All 16 SEC schools
17 Big 10 schools (all but Rutgers)
Add 7 more schools to get to 40: Clemson, Florida St, N Carolina, Miami, Colorado, Virginia, Virginia Tech.
Call it a day.
The next 40 or so best schools that got left out could probably band together and get a decent tv contract for a Division 2.
All 16 SEC schools
17 Big 10 schools (all but Rutgers)
Add 7 more schools to get to 40: Clemson, Florida St, N Carolina, Miami, Colorado, Virginia, Virginia Tech.
Call it a day.

I think ppl would be surprised who would be included in a breakaway. I imagine about 40-60 teams. I think Texas tech would be included. The only real draws outside the eastern and central time zone are USC and Oregon Washington. Then to a lesser degree zona state Utah byu ucla and Tex tech.

I think there are some high value big 12 teams that could compete at the top. Arizona st Utah Texas tech plus zona bball and Kansas bball being very appealing.

I don’t see this as any type of solution. Without a collective bargaining agreement, a new super league would run into the same issues that tge NCAA has. Member schools and players do not have to abide by any guidelines because they are non-enforceable in court without collective bargaining.
The new league will not have real investigation power just like the NCAA.
I’m for shrinking the power 4 to 50-60 teams after a CBA is created between NCAA and players.

With 40 teams we could have relegation and promotion of bottom 2 teams and top 2 in the 41-80 league

Yeah, the SEC better have a partner before they do it or they’ll be left behind in a few years. If the BIG didn’t go with them it would be everyone vs. the SEC and it wouldn’t end well for them. The SEC is no longer the top dog so these type of tactics no longer scare people.
How long until recruits realize they have no path to a National Title if the SEC only plays themselves. Sankey and many SEC people are still in the mindset from 2016 when they dominated. They have accepted that the BIG now calls the shots.

If/when the big 10 and sec do split off, should the playoffs to be split into an sec side and big ten side with the big ten winner and sec winner playing for the national championship, or keep the bracket mixed how it is now?

Not sure what the SEC’s strategy would have been, but the way the NCAA has handled NIL and the portal has been a case study in self-destruction.

Yall do realize that if the SEC and BIG break from the NCAA, then it's "open season" for poaching players from other teams inside the NCAA.

That would be really cool but any team that gets relegated would lose every single player within 12 hours of the season ending

Why would any of the top programs with all the money ever agree to a format that includes risk of relegation that would be an absolute program killer?

That's so stupid. Who the hell wants to just play against ourselves. Flex your muscle some other way. Now if included the Big 10, that would make more sense but still its stupid.

I think you have to keep all non-football sports separate. I mean you're going to have to let way more than 40 teams in the top division.
I wouldn't make any football decisions based upon a school's basketball appeal (ie Kansas, Arizona, UConn, etc)

If you are going to keep Miss St and them around because they were charter members of the SEC, then you are going to have to keep Rutgers because they played the first ever college football game. Kinda makes them the charter team for all of college football.
