Without that conference-generated revenue—and assuming no replacement revenue or spending cuts—that surplus would become approximately a $65.7 million deficit.

The claim that LSU’s football profit “heavily subsidizes the rest of the conference’s revenue pool” is simply false. LSU football helps subsidize LSU’s own non-revenue sports. Its operating profit is not deposited into an SEC fund and distributed to other universities. In reality, the SEC distributed approximately $70 million in conference-generated revenue to LSU.

The Big Ten is probably the only other conference financially capable of coming close to replacing LSU’s current SEC distribution. Even then, LSU would need an invitation and an immediate full revenue share—neither of which is guaranteed. An ACC or Big 12 payout would likely leave LSU approximately $20–27 million short annually, even before accounting for any decline in ticket sales, donations or sponsorships caused by losing its SEC schedule.

So LSU’s financial report does not demonstrate that LSU subsidizes the SEC. It demonstrates that a substantial portion of LSU’s athletic budget depends upon revenue generated and distributed by the SEC.

LSU needs the SEC MUCH more than the SEC needs LSU. No way is LSU ever getting a Big 10 invitation, so the best you can hope for is the Big 12. Eventually the SEC would just replace LSU with somebody from the ACC. It would be a bit of a revenue blip, but we'd still all be fine.

You know what might be a crazy situation to fall out from this?

Suppose, just for the sake of argument, the Big 10 decides to pursue Ga Tech, Miami, UNC, and ... LSU.

HUGE incursion into SEC heartland territory, including taking a relevant current SEC power, a coequal team in the state of Fla, a major team in Atlanta Ga, and "the" basketball king (which happens to fill into the geographic continuity).

You say they can't leave the ACC? It would break that conference, because Fla State and others would pivot and petition the SEC, and at some point the ACC dissolves and financial penalties aren't applied. That would require a lot of ACC schools opting to exit... maybe the Big East contingent and a few like Wake Forest and Duke, trying to secure a new conference where basketball is the big factor. You could see West Va and SMU moving, WVU going to that "new Big East" conference and SMU going into the Big 12.

LSU could probably claim irreparable differences and outright hostility from the SEC, and with them being sued for "you're embarrassing us" and threatened with expulsion that probably would stand up in court.

Big 10 drives a stake into their competition's heart, with only the miniscule chance that the SEC somehow convince Notre Dame to come in able to somewhat retaliate in kind. And let's not forget the Big 10 slit their own partner's throat a couple years ago (Pac 12).

"LSU's not AAU", you say. With the enormous amount of money at play, do you REALLY think the Big 10 would care, if they could win control over college football?
