Agreed. Gates is way overrated too. There are many other good BBQ joints in the KC area, but they are really nothing particularly special aside from the burnt ends. I miss Southern BBQ, so I just make it at home and avoid the restaurants most of the time here.

Just like their football, Texas barbecue costs way too much money for what you get.

Unless it has changed in the last year, Joe’s BBQ and Q39 are the best barbecue joints in Kansas City.

1 Memphis pork
2 Texas beef
3 Random KC and various other southern states, etc…
4 Carolinas

The inferiority complex the Carolina’s have over barbecue is nauseating. Just be like Alabama…they know they have a different thing going on, and accept it is not universally considered all that great. They just live with it. Believe it or not, the random person in this country, or the south, is not salivating over some busted arse mustard or vinegar based shite when the other options are available.

Brisket and Beef Rib - Texas
Everything Else? - the southeast.

I love Texas BBQ and Brisket but we can't touch the pork ribs in the southeast. It's fantastic out there.

Few years ago we took a road trip to Virgina so my daughter to could visit the university (thankfully she chose Texas) and we drove through Ark annd Tennessee going and the deep south coming back, stopping at local BBQ joints along the way. Was impressed with the quality of the Pork out there. Fantastic stuff.

By the way the Kansas City Brisket is also fantastic which makes sense since the original pitmasters there learned from the Texas pitmasters (look it up if you don't believe me)

Real barbecue can be brisket or pork or chicken. As long as it is made in the backyard over a fire with real wood or charcoal and cooked slow while an ice chest full of beer is gradually consumed or a handle of whiskey is slowly drained. And real barbecue sauce is not white or yellow and does not contain even a drop of mayonnaise. White barbecue sauce is an abomination unto God and man.

Yep you can find great bbq anywhere but nowhere is it taken more seriously than in the SEC footprint.

May be a hot take, not sure, but I generally don't consider anyone that wraps the meat, BBQ. Now, i'm not arguing that it isn't delicious, it definitely is. However, wrapping it turns it into something different. Still can be incredibly tasty, just not BBQ.

Seems like I have to reiterate this every day:

Alabama fans are not allowed to discuss bbq when you think white mayo sauce is for bbq

I've been all over the South and I've had all the different styles.

They're all delicious. Quit yer bitchin folks.

My personal favorite is the mustard sauce in South Carolina on some pork. Toss some slaw on top and let's ride.

Barbeque and barbeque sauce type are not mutually exclusive.

This. White sauce is for poultry. Through the rest of the state it’s generally tomato based.

My personal sauce is Pee Dee style vinegar pepper lol.
