Having a really good football definitely helps with that.

Yep. Like I said, the plan was already in place before Saban arrived. Saban arriving gave it jet fuel.

I always use this example:
How many people in Canada would know what LSU was if it wasn't for the football team?
Not many.

Yep. The original plan was to go after kids in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, DC. They've had so much success in those places and with the free publicity of the football program that we now have large groups of kids from Chicago, the New York suburbs, Los Angeles, South Florida, etc. My sister's sorority pledge class friends hometowns looks like people threw darts at a map of the country. It has it's good and bad, but it is definitely different.

I finished my BA 22 years ago and my MA 20 years ago and it's not even the same school.
I think what has happened at Alabama in the last 10 years has absolutely been great.
But because of that growth, my son probably won't go there. He's more of an introvert and his personality would get swallowed up at the current UA. Plus, he's getting some looks to play college golf at some smaller schools, so 95% chance he doesn't attend his parent's alma mater. 10 years ago he might could have gotten a look to play golf at Bama but they are so elite now that he isn't even on their radar. 10 years ago that's where he probably would have been headed.
My daughter probably won't go to UA but for opposite reasons - she wants to go out west - her big two are Stanford and UC-Berkeley. And she will thrive there. I'm hoping that UA's big, attractive financial packages for academics can get her to a least consider UA.
So, while as an alumna, I love what my alma mater is becoming, as a parent, I'm a little sad that it's now probably not a place either of my kids choose for college.

On that note. I once theorized, ask anyone in the country about "Alabama" and the most likely word you'll get back is "Racist." Bama and Auburn have subconsciously been working for years to replace that with the word "Football."

Question for Alabama alumni
Should produce at least 2-3 legit responses, and a dozen pretenders.

This board has quite a few alums. I'd even say that the majority are alums, and you can tell from the posts so far in the thread.
Contrary to popular belief the University actually hands out somewhere around 4,000 degrees every year to people who completed their studies and graduated from the University of Alabama.

The main reason for the increase in OOS kids are the generous financial aid packages available. Alabama basically says, if you get "this test score" you get your tuition paid. No essays, no interviews, just get the score.
That alone will draw a lot of kids, because most parents are going to be paying for an apartment no matter where little Johnny goes. Having no tuition costs makes that apartment much more attractive.
and 3 Natty's in 5 years doesn't hurt.

the school is making an effort to become a very good state school in the same breath with Georgia, Florida, etc.
Schools like that are doing it with 90% in state kids and retaining them within the state for their careers.
Alabama is not and cannot.

Agreed, they are relying on a mix of the best in-state kids and kids from big cities who either (a) want to leave or (b) can't get into the tough in-state admit.

I graduated in the 90s it's is a completely different campus now. My oldest child is currently a sophmore right now with a great grades and she is having the time of her life. Keeping her head focused on academics but enjoying the entire Bama experience as well.
She is 4th generation UA.

Did you find that the previous thread on this topic was insufficient?

I know. I'm just explaining why those schools are able to do it.

I agree with alot of these. Back in my days at Bama (late 80's)it was around 17K students at most. I think in 88 it may been around 15. Easy to navigate the campus, classes were more one on one. Just a university in a small town. There is more stuff to do but we enjoyed the quiet serenity that the campus gave us.
Now we are approaching 40K students with 300 people to a lab, not enough parking and housing popping up everywhere. Impossible to get around the campus in any orderly fashion. It's also being raided by the out of staters who are bringing money in yes but taking away the Alabama experience that we enjoyed. Dr. Witt had a vision and it is coming to fruition but at a cost that makes me a little uncomfortable.
