Isn't that what "family" is supposed to be all about? Or is that just an empty slogan reserved for fellow white people from Montgomery Academy, Homewood and "the good ones" on the football roster?

Oh wow.

Yes, we win championships. We (alumni) have no problem with this. Yes being on top attracts more 85%ers, but honestly who doesn't want to have the largest fan base in America? It's all about the $$$

However Tuscaloosa and Alabama wasn't meant to hold 50,000 students. Hell it can barely hold 37,000 students. I never really noticed how overcrowded things were here until these past 2 years. Traffic is awful in town, and there are people everywhere. There seems to be an overall lack of space, and it can suffocate someone.

Traffic around campus was pretty bad when I was there in the 90's, and enrollment was barely over 20,000, so I can only imagine how bad it has become. The good thing then was once you got away from campus it really wasn't too bad. I still have family and friends in Tuscaloosa and visit often, and there are days I'm there and the traffic is as bad as I experience in Birmingham.

My nephew is in school there now, and hearing him talk about campus life today blows my mind sometimes. He lives off campus and says there are some weeks he barely gets in his car to drive anywhere. We drove everywhere when I was in school, sometimes even driving from one commuter lot to another between classes.

And don't even get me started on how different it looks from my time there. I don't even recognize the area north of the main library and around Ferguson.

Yeah - those of y'all who graduated within the last 5-10 years and can't believe the changes, imagine how us old asses feel seeing it now compared to 20 years ago.

I went and stayed at my sorority's new house last summer for my 20 year pledge class reunion and our old house looks like some Section 8 shack compared to the new house.

The Ferg used to look like something from 1970s Soviet Russia.

You could walk from Tutwiler or sorority row to any class within 15 minutes.

Half our home games were in Birmingham and we rode a fraternity bus there and back. And those fricking games were at 11:30. Your hungover self had to be cute and on the bus by 7:30 AM.

God, I miss it. You youngins soak it all in because before you know it you'll be sitting here facing YOUR KID going off to college.

And it smelled like it on the inside as well.

I was kind of sad when I walked in there a few years ago and it didn't smell like that anymore.

Used to walk from house right behind the cemetery to Bidgood everyday. Took about 20 minutes. That was way back in the late 2000's.

I used to live in Burke and could walk anywhere in 15 minutes.

The Rec center may be pushing it, but anywhere else was in that range. It's the same way today.

Yep, I lived behind the cemetery, in the fraternity house on New Row and then back behind the cemetery and I only drove at night back to campus from the off-campus house for studying. I walked everywhere always in the fraternity house.

I feel like an arse because I graduated like 8 years ago and haven't really been keeping up with campus politics, demographics, rankings or blah blah blah

I pay some alumni due to be Alabama alumni but that's about it

The new Pike house made me really jealous the first time I stepped inside.

Those bus rides make up some my best memories.

I think the biggest coup the college board in AL has made is aggressively increasing enrollment at USA. That has allowed them to make UA (Ttown) more selective, and more of a flagship university with higher admissions standards. It will continue to grow, but not as fast as college attendance in general.

It is basically the same model as Florida, with UCF and USF with plans to grow to 100,000 students, while Gainesville stays closer to 50,000. Bigger is not always better.

I don't see what USA has to do with UA.

It is basically a relief valve for in-state students who Alabama would be forced to take but not have a second option. It lets you get off the hook for taking underperforming kids because the state doesn't produce enough high performers to fill classes at Alabama and Auburn, but you can't just shut out a large chunk of the state as the state's flagship school if there aren't other big, 4-year options.

UCF and USF are that valve for UF, and USA is acting that way for UA. A lot of kids that used to sneak into UA are now having to go to USA instead and USA is ok expanding in size to allow that increase.

USA keeps its admissions standards lower, and keeps growing faster, thus giving UA the opportunity to be more selective.

Bama is attracting students from all over. Large TX, Mich/Ohio, and northeast contingency. Weather seems to play a big part of the attraction. Cost of attending is also big. Football success has helped too, I am sure.

I just wanted to get opinions from alumni on this topic. Have you noticed a cultural change on campus? Friends of mine who went there have been adamant that the rising academic quality, as well as the improved geographic diversity of the student body has gone a long way torwards drowning out what used to be an incredibly insular, and toxic Greek culture on campus, on top of improved academic reputation.

As far as culture change goes, the biggest difference I have seen since 2007 is the strip. Rounders turned into a full blown club, added waffle house, the locker room (haberdashery) left bc of rent, and a other changes a little further up in the downtown area. University in general has changed a lot' from mcfarland all the way down to laurleen wallace blvd. I think some of it is change for the better but it does not feel like it used to. The school has added so many students it has seemed to change. in the early 2000s they would have never considered a full blown club on the strip. its just small things but a lot of small things that make a big chagne
