yo when I talk about college towns, I'm talking about them from the perspective of a college student.
why would I want to live in a college town if i didn't go to that college homey. i think it would be pretty tough to find a job in Oxford anyway.
think man.
you'll get it.
i'm not saying 1 mile is far but if the downtown / strip area is right next to campus, you can conveniently go to it more often. Keep in mind the students are walking around the campus a good bit already. why would i want to add a regular 2 mile round trip to a downtown area if i can go to a college with a more convenient setup like Auburn.

The title of this thread is moronic. The only logical debate to be had by any group would be is Oxford 1, 2 or 3 where the best SEC towns are concerned. Not comparing it to Nashville as that’s a whole different conversation we’ve had before. By any measure when discussing “college towns” and when it’s viewed objectively, Oxford is right up there. Don’t be stupid.

does anybody consider Fayetteville overrated?
it seems like the kind of place a lot of people would say it is underrated, kind of like everybody says Tom Petty and Trump are underrated.
A Clemson grad the other day said to me he considers Arky the Clemson of the SEC.

Right state, wrong school.

If BR is getting counted as a "college town" then Oxford isn't the worst

The whole "people are moving to college towns for quality of life" thing that really caught-on the past 10 years or so has been happening to Fayetteville for at least 30 years. Some of it was QOL, but a lot of it was the success of companies growing a few towns over, and urbanites who relocated for high-paying jobs not wanting to live in tiny Bentonville or Rogers (which is no longer the case, as those cities are outpacing Fayetteville in growth now). We've been a "cosmopolitan small town" in nature for a good 30 years.
Being rated a "great place to live" and a "top college town" and having a steady growth rate is something we have had going on for as long as I can remember.
As such, Fayetteville doesn't really "sell itself" anymore. It isn't news. Having cultural amenities you'd find in a larger town, and people moving in and growth aren't a novelty here anymore. Managing growth, controlling it, and preserving greenspace and countryside are bigger priorities than selling the town/region.
We've long had all the "best places" rankings, and NYT articles about whatever someone "discovered" here, and all that shite. Today, there are hundreds of "best college town" rankings by random tiny websites and blogs and most SEC towns show up on at least a few.
If there's an SEC "college town" in danger of "turning into Austin", with all the positive and negative and annoying shite that entails, it's probably this one.
In 2000, we were part of a little metro of maybe 300k people, spread out over 4 counties. By the 200 census, we'll be a metro of 600k, with still a rapid growth-rate. I hope it slows down, because I'm a small town guy.

You are just wrong. Oxford is a wonderful small town full of personality. Quit looking through the lenses of an urban rat who has to be entertained 24/7.

I always have a great time in Oxford. Best looking women in the SEC. Sounds like you’re the one with the problem.

Reservoir Dawg, he has not been to Starkville in 10 years, trust me on that.
I went there two years ago. I’ll be honest, with an open mind, I definitely didn’t think it was as bad as it’s gets a rep for. Y’all s campus is nice, and I didn’t have a problem with anyone there. But y’all comparing Starkville being great compared to Oxford in my mind is asinine, just like the OP, because honestly I’d rather send my kid to Starkeville or Oxford over Baton Rouge. The first time I visited LSU they had police tape because someone got shot on campus.

Oxford is the perfect college town.
I get what you’re saying about it would be better if the Square was adjacent to campus but I disagree. I think the distance (which is filled by a nice residential area) provides a buffer between campus and the downtown. Do you really want the night time entertainmanet crowd spilling onto campus?
Plus, it provides students the needed exercise in walking back to campus after a night out on the Square.

Oxford is a very nice place. The local schools are good and they are public so you don’t have to pay a fortune for school. The downtown is also quite nice as is the campus. There are nicer places with more to do I’m certain. I’ve been to them ( LA, NYC, Orlando, San Diego, Honolulu, Charleston, San Antonio, Miami) but that’s comparing apples to oranges and not to the point I don’t guess of this conversation. We are talking college towns and not cities that have multiple colleges. If somebody doesn’t care for Oxford and even Mississipp in general that’s fine. We can’t change everybody’s mind. I think we do a good job of making visitors feel welcome and that’s about all we can do.
