Should be noted that Oklahoma State had their women's basketball coach die in plane crash the day before the Iowa State game. Easy to see why they might not have been as focused on that game.

They were focused on that game

Oklahoma State allowed Stanford to rush at an average of 9 yards per carry. Let that sink in. LSU would not even have to attempt a pass.

Stanford's offense was way better than LSU's in 2011. Like not even in the same stratosphere

That LSU defense would have forced at least 2 turnovers. There were just too many playmakers in the secondary for Gundy to just assume they'd be able to move the ball at will. I think that 10 of 11 starters on that D ended up playing in the NFL.

I'm not saying they couldn't have won, but Gundy is talking out of his arse.

I still don't know how a team can have 3 starting NFL receivers and jack shite at QB. Just makes no sense.

Mike Gundy is a poor man's Mike Leach when it comes to his personality.

When asked how he would coach his son, Gunnar Gundy, if the situation arose: "I told him, if you come to Oklahoma State, I'll coach you like I do everybody else If you're the best player, you'll play. If not, you won't play even though I'm sleeping with your mom."

LSU hasn’t ever been good on offense. LSU wins via suffocating defense and soul crushing running of the damn ball!

Why does everybody think this is so far fetched? That championship game LSU looked like a chicken with its head cut off. They were terribad that game. Brandon weeden and Justin blackmon would've had a field day. And I'm pretty sure they had a good running back that year also.

And... none of that would have mattered.

Seriously, how do you feel Okie State would have fared against, say, 2011 Arkansas, Oregon, West Virginia or Georgia? Good, close, tight game, likely?

Alabama was probably the better overall team that year, they did have the better offense. They were also the ONLY team capable of going toe-to-toe with LSU for 60 minutes and not collapsing at some point. And 21-0 wasn't some massive blowout, it was a series of field goals that got them breathing room on the scoreboard... and their defense made that stand up.
Did Okie State have the defense Bama did that year? If your answer is "no", then LSU wins that game something like 40-20 in coast mode.

Would they need two tries or just the one?

LSU was better in the secondary than Bama but the Tide could get after the passer better with Courtney Upshaw and Dante Hightower. Alabama was no slouch back there either.

Not to mention Okie State never would have stopped the Alabama ground game.

And that they they had snuck out a W in Tuscaloosa despite having inferior stats due to luck and help from the refs.

Haha...still have trouble digesting 9-6 even after 21-0, huh? The total yards only differed by like 56 yards or something like that and LSU outrushed Bama by 50+ yards (and held Bama to less than 100 yards rushing in an overtime game). Also, LSU's kicker didn't suck like Bama's kickers did, so he made his FGs. Saban was stupid for attempting so many prayer FGs with shitty kickers instead of punting and pinning LSU deep in their own territory.

Gundy greatly underestimates LSU's 2011 defense. That LSU team would have destroyed a greatly overrated OSU team.

Most bluebloods were down in 2011, with the exception of Alabama and LSU. I honestly believe that Arkansas was the 3rd best team and that no one else was even close to Alabama/LSU.

Yeah that LSU team was not overrated at all. Bama is the only team that could them; no else would’ve come close

Despite Oklahoma State' strength of schedule being superior to Alabama's, and OSU finishing ahead of Alabama in the computer polls (both that compiled 1/2 of the BCS formula that year), the result was the slimmest margin ever between two teams in the final BCS Standings. Alabama had an average score of .9419 whereas Oklahoma State had an average score of .9333.

Oklahoma St's SoS was not more difficult than Alabama's unless you use averages. Which is to claim that playing the #49 and #51 teams is equal SoS to playing the #1 and #100 teams. It's not. About 40 teams could easily go undefeated playing 1 of those schedules and almost no team could go undefeated playing the other.

This is often times a flaw in the computer rankings and quite frankly some of the BCS computer rankings suck arse. Well most all of them do and the only reason they were used is because they were all that was available, not because they showed some kind of actual insight.

quote:

Why ?????????????

Because the AGREED-UPON BCS FORMULA WAS IGNORED. due to the fact that several head football coaches used their vote in the Coaches Poll to diminish OSU's position by voting them No. 4 or lower; among those to do so were, Alabama head coach Nick Saban, former Big 12, head coach of Missouri Gary Pinkel, Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun, and Stanford head coach David Shaw.

This is just straight up wrong. The formula was used, not even sure why you think otherwise.

If I were an ala-shamea Gumpneck Thing fan, I would be extremely phucking embarrassed that my 3rd place SEC team was given a berth in the BCSNCG, WITH the BCS Rules TOTALLY IGNORED.

My question - Why even PLAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY the SEC Championship Game that year ??????????????????????

The SEC Championship game is to decide the SEC Champion. That's it. And LSU was the SEC Champion that year.

It doesn't determine who should go where in the post season(other than bowl tie-ins). It doesn't look to match up the 2 highest ranking teams, it doesn't even consider the OOC schedule. etc.

Hell a team could go out and lose every single OOC game and still make it into the SEC Championship game because it's purpose is only for the SEC, nothing else.

People need to stop acting like it's more than it is.

Although LSU has always been more of a defensive team, there have been years when they've been very good on offense. Rohan Davey threw for 528 yards at Bama and Josh Reed caught 19 passes for 293 yards in that same game while LSU posted 611 yards against Bama (all of those were and I believe still are the highest totals Bama has given up in their history in Bryant-Denny). Matt Flynn also threw for 400+ yards on Bama/Saban in 2007 while LSU posted 41 points at Bryant-Denny.

I don't fault Gundy for saying such, what else is he supposed to say? "Ya they would have totally kicked our asses"

Regardless, that OSU team was gonna get slaughtered by LSU, Alabama, or any other team with a physically dominate defense.

There's a reason why the Hawaiis and UCFs don't get the benefit of the doubt and it's because the are just obviously not in the same talent tier. LSU had more NFL talent in their 2nd string alone.
