We’ve gotten to know the Hawgs and Gamecocks over 30 years and they’re like old family now, and we’ve recently come to understand A&M’s affinity for gay porn and weird cheers, and we’ve done our best to ignore Mizzou, ‘cuz y’know, who fricking cares. I know a little about your football history because you’re a traditional power with Nattys, Heismans, all-Americans, etc. but I gotta admit I don’t know much about Sooner fan culture. Game Day traditions, cheers, game day culture…can you give the OG’s a synopsis?

They become the second most decorated football team in the SEC the moment their feet hit the door. Not going to ask you if you can relate.

Seriously, it’s so refreshing to finally get a formidable opponent added to the SEC after 30 years. We don’t know how to control our excitement.

I think SEC fan will be disappointed with OU "tradition" relative to what you are used to.

Things are rather chill out here on the plains. OU fans are rather reserved as we are somewhat paranoid about our rep as being "trashy Okies". Secondly, OU fans take the actual game more seriously than most. Meaning winning the game is way more important than the party. This is true for everyone but the students.

The result is that the crowd isn't terribly intimidating. Can get loud on occasion but it isn't sustained. Timeouts have no crowd energy. Everybody rests.

Pregame, the tailgating thing isn't huge. Partly because the University doesn't want the campus lawns being torn up. And partly because the people in the Campus Corner (entertainment) district want people down there.

Pregame about the only thing that happens is the band marches from the music building past Campus Corner, through campus and to the stadium. And we have a team "walk" which is very lame compared to SEC standards.

Pregame, OU crowds are early arriving. Probably our most "unique" tradition is throwing our opponents footballs out of the stadium (north end zone) while they are warming up. They also do this during the game. (Opponents are notified of this tradition and OU has "ball retrievers" and "runners" to get the balls back to the opponent."

Band entrance and fanfare is really cool. Probably the best thing we do.
Play opponents fight song if their band isn't present to kiss opponents arse and prove we aren't classless Okies. (sucks, we hate it and hopefully all SEC teams will bring their own bands).
Sooner Schooner is cool for little kids.
Horsepigs- Our costume mascots. Our own fans are embarrassed by them. Again, little kids like them.
Rufneks- Usually the bottom of the barrel guys on campus end and their GFs end up in this "spirit group," They dress up in red and white corduroy outfits. They shoot off red and white shot guns during the game.
Boomer Sooner chant across the stadium between east and west stands is our only "chant"
"Only One Oklahoma" video message before the team enters is usually pretty cool. Actual team entrance is pretty weak.
Seven Army Nation thing (or whatever it's called) before opening kick. Lame.
Chant OU!! while the kicker approaches and kicks the ball. Meh.

That's pretty much the size of it. Not a lot of gameday tradition compared to your standard SEC program. Oh, and we have fireworks and the LED light flashing stuff for night games now days.

I’m not asking about that, dickhead. I’m asking about their traditions… y’know like your tradition of standing on the steps of the university not letting Black people in or killing harmless trees on rival campuses or your head coaches slapping secretaries around. Traditions, knowhadamean?

And I'm telling you. They have the second-best "tradition" of winning national championships in the SEC. I'd be more concerned with that than how many attend their next tailgate Bar BQ.

Having been to several games in Norman, I'd say Gunga Din paints a pretty complete picture. Only thing missing is the fact that they play Boomer Sooner more than Tennessee plays Rocky Top, but I suppose you get used to it and don't notice it as much if you are a fan of the home team.

ALL GAME LONG!

^ this isn’t even a joke.. i bet they play it 100 times a game, but it’s a whole lot more fun when you beat them. Shocking, I know.

quote:

Have you ever gone to an OU game and wondered to yourself: “HOW MANY TIMES ARE THEY GOING TO PLAY BOOMER SOONER?!

Well, thanks to a very concentrated individual who counted every time it was played this season, now we know the answer to that question. The OU band played the “Boomer Sooner” song 110 times during Bedlam this year – tied for the record high this season with the Tennessee game (which went to 2 overtimes, I might add). A total of 948 times on the season.

Ah, you should have said so.

Let's see. Norman was a "sundown" town from 1898 when a black guy got beat up for being on a white guys work crew until 1967 when the University hired a Black dude for the faculty and he was actually able to buy a house in town.
(The University and football team had been integrated well before then).

There was a riot in 1922 when a Black jazz group (The Singie Smith Singers) continued performing after dark in the student Union ballroom. The students protected the group from the townspeople trying to get at them for violating the sundown laws.

Signs indicating that Norman was a "sundown town" existed on Main street until the early 1960s.

A University VP and Chemistry professor was head of the Oklahoma KKK in the early 1920s. Years later his name was removed from the building named after him and the street named after him in town went through a name change.

Obvious resistance to integration of the University. First integration was in 1949 of the Law School and Grad school. Case went to the SCOTUS forcing OU to integrate. Undergrad integrated in 1953. Football and basketball integrated in 1956.

Main coaching scandals were Switzer. In the 1970s and 1980s if you had a daughter at OU who was hot there is about a 50% chance that Barry had hit on her. And if he didn't the wrestling coach at the time, Stan Abel probably did.

Larry Cochell was NC winning baseball coach who got fired for saying the "N" word.

And Dave Bliss coached at OU for a few years.

Hope that helps.

I agree with everything you posted, though I think our party scene/tailgate culture will improve in the SEC. But this quoted bit is just so true. Bars would be relatively empty if we lost at home when I was a student. It was time for mourning, not partying.

I'll also say that our fans don't really talk shite, which is something that some SEC fanbases seem to revel in (cough LSU cough). That might be a bit of a culture shock for some of us.

Are the furry mascot suits ever supposed to be "intimidating"?

Other than that incredibly bizarre secondary Oregon mascot the Ducks tried to use a few years back?
