On February 12, Auburn beat Texas AM by 20 points. It was Texas AM's eight loss in a row, dropping them to 15-10 on the season and removing any flickering hopes of making the NCAA tournament. Auburn, meanwhile, was 23-2, ranked #1 in the country and was cruising towards another SEC championship and a top seed.

Imagine if someone told you that mid-February night that Texas AM would finish with the same number of wins as Auburn and a bigger smile when the season was finished. You would think they were crazy but that will be the case if Texas AM wins the NIT.

My how things can change...

That’s what I expected to hear from most.
Was just wondering what the majority thought.
Thanks for your honest response.

I always thought it would be cool if you could somehow inject the NIT champion into the NCAA Sweet 16. I’d love to see if the momentum from winning that NIT could carry them into the Elite 8 or even the Final Four.

Early in the season I thought the NIT was what we were looking at and a good run there would have been nice. I like to win wherever we go. Good luck to you…

The NIT is the original national championship tournament. A lot older than the NCAA tourney.

It's badass if you have a lot of returning players.

It’s a competition.

If you win it, you won something.

Like a Gator Bowl or whatever. You can only show up, play, and try to win the events you are selected for.

A&M probably should have been in the Big Dance.

Are you kidding me? If aggy wins this thing, stand back……. There will be rings, cup, shirts, banners, parades and 12 months of “we would have won the final 4 “ talk. Its aggy.

Not at all. A&M can use this experience to bolster expectations next season.

First, your team would need to be in it to win and honestly, if you didn't make the Big Dance or the Little Dance... then apparently your team is pretty bad.

As for being embarrassed if they won it... i wouldn't call it "cup print" worthy but it's better than not.

In the stupid world we live in people treat the NIT as if it is lame. There are really good teams in it some of which had legit claims to the ncaa tourney. Winning the NIT is a pretty cool accomplishment.

It's like winning the Independence or Birmingham Bowl. Nothing to brag about, but if you win you feel pretty good about having something to build on for next season.

We won it twice in a row and I never talk about it, well until this thread.

Hard to compare since Bama's never won the Bham Bowl nor the NIT.

Hope A&M wins it all.

Oh, and stop worrying about what people think. That should have been the case years and years ago but in today's world it is a necessity.

Embarrassing? No.

Would I trade it for losing in the 1st round of the NCAAT? No.

I'd be happy with it if I was A&M that the guys were able to pick themselves up off the mat after what had to be a crushing selection Sunday. Shows competitive character.

To me, making the nit is like a consolation prize - at least you get to watch your team play more ball. And I love basketball best so I’d take it. Plus, if you win it all then I kind of think (others may disagree) you can do a and say that your team was good enough to make the ncaa tourney whether the record showed it or not. So, in a nutshell, hell no it’s not embarrassing to win the nit even if it lacks the pomp and circumstance that the big dance brings.

I’ve heard the NIT is the new NCAAT and everyone who thinks otherwise is just a bunch of jealous try-hards.
