Disappointed and frustrated by the slow pace of minority hiring in college and professional football, second-year University of Maryland head coach Michael Locksley today will announce the creation of the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches.

The nonprofit organization will seek to not only identify and groom coaches of color (male and female) for upward mobility, but also create a candidates list that will be vetted by a board of directors that includes some of the most respected and powerful names in sport.

"When I took the Maryland job last year and looked at the landscape of college football, I thought to myself, There's something missing. I'm on the back nine of my career and the pathway to becoming a head coach is still as difficult as when I got into the business in 1992," the 50-year-old Locksley said by phone Wednesday evening. "I wanted to create an organization that would be able to help prepare, promote and produce the next group of coaches coming up through the ranks at every level."

Currently, there are only three Black head coaches among the NFL's 32 teams and just 14 Black head coaches among college's 130 Football Bowl Subdivision squads. That lack of racial diversity is often attributed to a dearth of qualified minorities "in the pipeline," but Locksley and others are hoping to silence the narrative by providing prospective employers with candidates who've been reviewed by successful individuals who know what quality coaching looks like.

The NCMFC Board of Directors includes:

- Ozzie Newsome, Hall of Famer on college and pro levels, first Black general manager in the NFL, overseer of two Super Bowl winners in Baltimore.
- Nick Saban, University of Alabama head coach and six-time national champion.
- Bill Polian, Pro Football Hall of Fame general manager whose teams participated in five Super Bowls, winning one.
- Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, two-time Super Bowl participant and XLIII winner.
- Doug Williams, Super Bowl XXII MVP quarterback and Washington Football Team executive.
- Oliver "Buddy" Pough, South Carolina State head coach.
- Willie Jeffries, first Black head coach in Division I football at Wichita State.
- Chris Grier, Miami Dolphins general manager.
- Debbie Yow, retired basketball coach and pioneering college administrator.
- Rick Smith, former Houston Texans general manager.
- Desiree Reed-Francois, UNLV athletic director and first Hispanic female and woman of color to be AD at an FBS school.

there are tons of white guys passed over for head coaches. I'd like to see more emphasis on the hiring of more black coordinators.

He got the Maryland job with a career head coaching record of 3-31, that doesn't exactly speak to lack of mobility

Yay! More SJ, just what we needed.

For context, 3/32 = 9.4%
14/130 = 10.8%

% of Americans who are black = 13.4%

So, add 1 to 2 to the NFL and 3 to 4 to college, and you have an accurate representation. So, we're talking 4 to 6 people out of a job market of 162 jobs. Oh the horror!!!!

Saban's main passion in coaching is recruiting.
This is another genius strategic move on his part.
Just like the BLM video his players did a couple months ago.

This dude got an FBS HC gig at 40. Went 2-26 and was still able to land a P5 job a few years later

White 2ndary Players get to compete on a Level playing Field with videotaped practices & Games that determine if they deserve the scholly, this open competition on the FIELD eliminates all bias in the process of choosing who becomes a 2ndary Player(DB)

OTOH, the hiring of Coaches is based on the opinion of a person or group and it usually done in a secretive process where the variables involved aren't public and in many cases are not clearly defined, plus there is historical evidence that much more bias enter this process than what an Athlete on the field faces while trying to become a DB

To summarize, these situations are not the same, not even close

Most teams just want championships regardless of a Coach's race.

After he lost a lot of Games at an outpost Program where it is damn near impossible to win, he dropped back to a position coach, worked his way back up to Coordinator, and then got another FBS HC job based on his work as a Coordinator at a P5 Level Program

When you tell the story, tell the whole damn story and not just the part that fits your bullshite agenda(s)

He won 2 games in 3 years. The guy who followed him doubled that in year 1 and in a few years had back to back bowl appearances

He was OC at Maryland immediately after being fired from NM

Go frick yourself idiot

Sure, just not at my school. You other guys emphasize race and we’ll go with whoever is the best coach.

That reminds me, why couldn’t he get Bobby Williams a head coaching job again?

Surely you’re a troll right? I hope to hell no one is dumb enough to read what you replied to and not comprehend he was being facetious/silly. Iow, I hope no one is dumb enough irl to actually believe what you type.
