He was born in 1951.
The initial draft was for people of service age (born January '44 through December '50). So, he was too young for the initial draft lottery. The draft wasn't abolished until 1973, but just because you were of draft age...didn't mean that you would be drafted.
In Saban's case, he would have probably gotten a deferment for when he was in college (which would have lasted through when he finished graduate school in 1975). So, it wasn't that he was too young to be drafted, but that he went to college and graduate school.

Question? Besides Nick Saban, what other SEC coach evaded service in Vietnam? He sickens me...

This is not true. The 1971 draft was solely for men born in 1951.

not true, i was in college during the Vietnam war and i was not on any draft board. I joined in 1968 and went to Vietnam in 69 and 70.

Nick Saban didn't meet the minimum height requirements to be drafted.

So they are making new dodge Chargers in Vietnam specifically for Saban? WOW!

Incorrect. The 1970 draft was geared toward men born in 1951, not the '71 draft.

Correct. I was thinking of the initial draft. My bad. I looked up Saban's draft number. It was 311 for the 1971 draft. If you number was higher than 125 you were safe from the draft. Fascinating stuff

The date of the drawing was in 1970 but it was the 1971 draft

I dont know the rate at which student deferments were given but it seems pretty liberal, I have done enough googling on this already. Interestingly there were a lot of guys in college who got drafted but didnt ask for a deferment and served instead

No doubt, there were exceptions, but I never heard of anyone doing that - particularly when it became clear from buddies returning home from V.N. what a not-allowed-to-win shite show it was over there.

Probably a good thing. I mean getting out of a bunker would be like The Grand Canyon for him.

I think for some they thought they would still have to serve after they got out of college so go ahead and get it over with and have the military pay for the rest of school.
