Okay, here's the deal. Saban is a year younger than me. In my case my draft lottery number was 40, which would have been a sure thing, but I had a student deferment and when I graduated in 74 the draft was over.
Saban's lottery was the year before. His number was 330. So he never would have been drafted even had he not had the student deferment.

I think for some they thought they would still have to serve after they got out of college so go ahead and get it over with and have the military pay for the rest of school.
And also, never heard of anyone in college getting a draft notice. The exemption forms were all handled during college registration (or before)... not in response to a draft notice.
And yes, some guys enlisted, and many entered ROTC programs. But getting a draft notice WHILE in college would have been a clerical error.
However, if a guy flunked out or dropped out, the draft notices were sent out, pronto.

I know at one point the graduate school part was done away with. My dad did a year at Cumberland to avoid it as long as possible. He ended up enlisting bc at some point that changed and he knew he would be drafted.

An old Vietnam vet buddy of mine says he got drafted while in college, and didn't get a deferment because he was below a certain class rank and didn't have a choice. No clue if that was the case or not, but I don't see much reason to disbelieve him, even if he was a Barner.

Trumps had a medical deferment- at least according to the doctor his Dad hired.
And let's nat forget Air National Guard Bush. Seems that scorn for dodging a draft only applies to libs like Clinton.

I was in High School in 1969 - any one with a brain did not want to go to that jungle to fight that stupid war - no one

Exactly. Those bone spurs haven't seemed to bother him much since

You do know the Army of the USA has height requirements.
I mean his gun hanging on his shoulder would have been dragging on the ground.

No, he wasn't.
The draft ended in 1973, I think, and he would have been 22.
He could have been drafted by 3-4 years.

I’m sure there’s a hight minimum to enlist

Not true, Saban's birthday is October 31, 1951, he would have needed to be born in 1954 or later to be too young to be drafted.
I have no idea if he ever had any deferments, I would doubt that, since he was a football player at Kent State at the time.
But he had no reason to dodge the draft.
The draft lottery number for his birthday was 311, meaning he had almost zero chance to be drafted.
In general, guys with draft lottery numbers under 150 would be drafted, those between 150 and 250 might be drafted depending on the need of their local draft board and anyone with a number over 250 would have had to be really, really unlucky to be drafted.
Saban had luck back then, and he still has it today.

As I mentioned, if you fell below passing grades, the draft notice hit your mailbox fast. The college might have been willing to let you hang around to try to catch up, but the draft board would get you first.

I am no fan of Saban, but I don't believe he dodged the draft.
