Everyone claiming this would make the sport "better" had a very shortsighted view of the impact it would have.

The trifecta of crap that ruined college football:

NIL
Transfer Portal with no sit-out period
Expanded playoffs

We said there’s never gonna be another Bear Bryant

Until Nick Saban came along

There will never be another Saban again

Until we see another Nick Saban

Remember when winning your conference and/or going to a bowl (even invite bowls like the Independence or Gator or etc.) constituted a successful season?

Absolutely. I'm not old enough to remember the 70s, but definitely remember the 80s.

The 80s and 90s, before the bowl explosion, were they heydays of college football from my experience. The first "beginning of the end" was when there were more bowl games than teams that finished over .500.

Bryant did not have a scholarship or formal roster limit. He signed as many good players that he could fit into the locker room.

Stating the obvious but - came in at the peak of his career and didn’t have to navigate around transfer portals and NIL. Only coach that had 4 and 5 stars riding the bench for 2 years, developing, waiting their turn. Literally nothing but 4-5 stars three deep on the depth charts. Nobody can afford that anymore.

Got out when he could.

Even if there is another Nick Saban floating around out there, he won’t coach more than 10 years at a specific place. No need when they’re making $13,000,000 per year.

Frick yes. It used to be a big deal to be bowl eligible and every bowl game mattered. There was basically no such thing as an opt out.

Now most bowl games are glorified pre-spring scrimmages.

Saban is the one that started this money hungry grab! Probably his wife … she seems to be the money manager
Had to be the highest paid coach

Then turns tale when everything goes south.
College football is done.

What about 2003 Nick Saban?

2003 Nick Saban was great, but that was a different era. IT took a coach like Nick Saban to come to LSU and tell everyone to get the hell out his way. Ticket takers, u do your job, Concessions people u do your job, LSU PD, u do ur job, Administrators U do your job, Politicians u do politics, fans u be fans, media u be media and I will coach football.

Then you have LA HS talent that Saban leveraged and got if you look at the top 20 players in Louisiana, he got the top 15 to 18 of those he wanted, which built the championship rosters he had. He supplemented the roster with recruits from TX, AL, FL, MS, TN, etc, etc.

Today, someone with an NIL budget can take a recruit from the SEC footprint and pay them enough to go to play for Oregon in the Pacific NW or Ohio State or Michigan, or USC, etc and the family of those players can fly out on Friday to see the young man play and fly back on Sunday 7 times a year without it impacting their family budget.

In Saban's era, kids from LA or other SEC footprint states were not signing with Oregon, other Big 10 schools or even USC, save perhaps when Peter Carroll was there he could like Saban potentially pull a recruit from the SEC footprint to go play for USC.

Different era

Saban found it more difficult to win on a level playing field $ wise.

So schools want a coach that can win consistently and compete for a playoff spot every year? That's one hot take you have there.

Not going to happen.

Alabama is now just one big fish in a larger pond full of big fish.

The parity and extra in-conference game are going to diminish the net results.

The 2022 Georgia team will very likely be the very last undefeated team to win a Natty emerging from the SEC.

Every Alabama recruit from 2006 to 2020, that stayed for just 3 years, left with at least 1 NC ring.

That's 14 straight recruiting classes.

That will never be replicated.

(Full disclosure sidenote...I say every player. There was 1 player from the 2006 class that left early for the NFL that didn't get a ring...Andre Smith.)

There are ten SEC teams who have $10m+ in NIL this season with the Tejas and LSU $20m+ (of the public universities according to chatgpt).

The BigX has 5 teams $10m+ and OhioSt is the only $20m+ (of the public universities).

Kentucky, Arky, & Barn all have more NIL than every BigX school except 5.

MissSt has more NIL than Rutgers and Maryland each almost 2 to 1.

OhioSt is about to go on a stupid run of conference championships because if IU wins in Indy in Dec OhioSt will order the BigX to dissolve the BIGXCG. Will they be able to run roughshod through the playoffs every year? Well, they'll always have to play one less game and never play on the road. There is no one in the BigX that will continue to spend like OhioSt except Mich and they have a mid-tier coach and they were beaten by OU who isn't the best team by far in the SEC. Nobody is benefitting from NIL like OhioSt.

These schools need to ignore his records and focus on the fact the Nick couldn't handle this shite system/players and threw his keys at the AD.

Terry Saban..."why are we doing this anymore? The parent doesn't care about but how much you're going to pay them!)

They f up everything they touch, and it is already documented for you.
