2015 we had the 4th ranked class on 247 and in 2014 the 7th ranked class.

He brought in some big classes with lots of players.

But yeah, most coaches can recruit at Tennessee.

Despite the nay sayers, we are still a national brand.

I definitely didn't think this at the time, but in hindsight, Shula did a pretty good job of keeping the program from completely falling apart to the point where no one could save it (ie. Miami, Nebraska, etc.)

Timing was also bad for him as SEC dominance started around the same time he took over.

With the benefit of hindsight Shula looks like the Pittman hire for Arkansas. You didn't hire him to work miracles, you hired him to simply stop the bleeding. And he pulled that off. Folks got mad at him for not being the next great super coach, but the next great super coach wasn't going to take the job at that point.

Holy smokes, just looked it up. He threw 5 interceptions, IN THE 4TH QUARTER?!?!

Oh my, can't even imagine how you felt watching that.

ETA: article for those interested

I’d replace Brad Scott on that list.

I feel like this is its own category, the stop-gap/glorified interim coach. Shula, Pittman, Matt Luke, Arnett, fit this mold, and truthfully probably Derek Dooley, where like you said not be great but just to keep from totally bottoming out at the time bc no one of note was going to touch you.

Agreed. That's why Matt Luke wouldn't be on my list. He was not positioned to win many games at Ole Miss and he kept the job attractive enough for the next guy.

Croom at least beat Saban. He gets a reprieve for that alone.

Matt wasn't a good gameday coach but he did a good job of maintaining and recruiting during a very difficult period. Not sure he's the worst Ole Miss coach this millennium. Orgeron was an equally bad game day coach (if not worse) at Ole Miss and Houston Nutt/David Lee literally held up signs with the player's initials on it that they wanted the ball to go to. (IE if they wanted Brandon Bolden to run the ball, one of the signs they held up just said BB on it) You really can't get any worse than that.

Just think how bad another coach would have to be to knock Chad out of 1st place.

Never forget Curley Hallman beat the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide on the road in 1993

Been watching this game on Youtube. So far Ivory Hilliard has two interceptions and lateralled both to trailing Tigers for extra yardage.

We need to bring back the lateral on D.

Just go ahead and fast forward to the second half.

As bad as Matt Luke’s tenure was at Ole Miss, he was sacrificial lamb who inherited an absolute mess.

Coach O however was a disaster as coach, yet won a natty at LSU. He has to be the biggest mystery in the history of college football. How he ever get a head coaching job in the first place is beyond me! ????????

People also forget that Croom was hamstrung by NCAA sanctions caused by his predecessor.
