I can't imagine that kind of money changing hands without a clear contract so this "should" be a quick read of the paperwork, but I have little faith in our legal system.

No. UGA paid Wilson $30k. Missouri ended up reimbursing UGA that $30k.

This should be easily proven true or false easily.
The countersuit alleges Wilson signed what he considered to be a non-binding “term sheet” and not a binding NIL contract without the presence of legal council and felt pressured to sign the paperwork “with the understanding it was not final” on Dec. 21, 2024.
If this is true, it will be his first lesson in life. You are sigingin papers potentially involving hundreds of thousands of dollars and not have a lawyer look it over?

Interesting if true. One of the Mizzou beat writers had an article where he was saying Missouri paid back the money to UGA.

One interesting piece of this which I’d like to know if all schools are doing other than just Georgia is the form of contract here. It’s got a heavily punitive aspect to it.
I can see the logic of “you come here and as long as you are here, we pay you $30k a month. If you leave, the payments stop”.
UGAs position (which I think is awesome) conforms more to a typical 2 party agreement where both sides have to meet their full obligation and imposes damages if not. I don’t know why any kid would sign that these days tbh.
So apparently this was a one-ish year contract or 13 months. he stays for a month then bolts. kid signed a bad deal.
but that begs the question how many of these contracts are written like this and how big a negotiating point it becomes. also SHOCKED that Mizzou didn’t make the kid produce this paperwork up front and nip this in the bud on his behalf. “kid, you know if you come to Mizzou, this deal you signed w UGA says you owe them $300k plus?”

That may or may not be true, I have no way of knowing, but people are getting confused here. We're talking about $30k not, $390k.
The $30k should definitely have been repaid. The liquidated damages part is bullshite. He never got that money. I've spent a career dealing with executive compensation. The general rule is if the exec breaks the contract, he pays back the funds that have been advanced but not yet earned and forfeits any other stock or options granted but not vested.
In terms of personal services contracts, you can not MAKE someone work for you or make them pay you if they choose not to. Generally, you can only recover what has been paid but not earned.
ETA: This is different from say an entertainer who is a no-show for a concert, the promoter of which has sold tickets and booked a venue and has real out-of-pocket damages. If Georgia is going this route, it would have to prove and quantify actual damages sustained. I think they would be hard-pressed to quantify how one player's departure cost them ticket sales, etc.
