Prior to the BCS, ncaa didn't choose major college football titles, but the list you speak of names many of the sources that have chosen "football champions". That same list has like 23 for Alabama, which is silly. Traditionally, there were 2 noted sources. From 1936 there were Associated Press (AP), which were compiled by respected sports journalists, and later, United Press International (UPI), which were compiled by the coaches. Later still the UPI poll was compiled by USA Today, though still voted by the coaches. Prior to those years, NCF and HAF were considered respected sources. Counting small, biased sources and tangential sources undermines the whole bunch.

probably shoulda just went with 1983 & 2004 - UMiami jumping from 5 to 1 over 3 Auburn was complete Northern anti-SEC media bias that existed in full voice back then -
1993 Auburn only beat 2 ranks teams (#4 & #11) .... while FSU beat 6 ranked teams including #7 #3 & #2 - and lost at #2 Notre Dame -

Auburn was royally screwed by the system in both 1983 and 2004. But getting screwed by the system does not equate to a national championship.
