The big thing with the 2013 team is that we lead the nation in 3rd down conversion rate. That offense relied on slowly moving the ball down the field and converting on 3rd downs consistently. This team can score from any place on the field, faces much fewer 3rd downs, and typically the 3rd downs are shorter distances.... However that team was much better at just powering through for a yard if we needed it.

Mett had a better arm, but Burrow makes better/quicker decisions and is more mobile.

You obviously picked stats that showed them as similar as possible, which is fine, but you ignored some of the most important stats in doing it.

points for/against
red zone trips/efficiency
3rd down efficiency

I don’t know how those stats compare, but they generally tell how well a team is doing far better than yards.

Not the same ole toss dive offense though.

The offense is Far better. Not even really comparable honestly

As far as defense, we def have more talent this year. We had nothing on the line in 2013. Stats are weird also. We held vandy to the same Yards per play and first downs as UGA did(vandy had 4 more possessions against us as well). So I think this early in the year people are making much about nothing

When we get Chaisson, lawrence, and logan back, (yes, we are missing our 3 best lineman right now.)I expect our defense to look very good

Because YPG median numbers have shifted in the last 6 years - it's hard to compare yardage to yardage these days.

Well, the defense in 2019 is actually allowing less

For starters, Burrow is a lot better than Mettenberger. The system this year is a lot better. In 2013, they ran Les’ 1970’s offense with a few extra play action pass plays. This year’s team runs something similar to what Sean Payton runs with the Saints. No comparison. The yards they put up in 2013 was pretty remarkable, considering the system they were running, which is a testament to the talent that was on the field.

Jeremy Hill was better than Edwards-Helaire. The jury is still out on the o-line, because Ed Ingram recently returned.

You can’t get better than the top two receivers on that 2013 team (Odell and Jarvis), but the group this year is deeper.

The defenses are about the same.

Overall, the talent around the qb may have been better in 2013, but the qb, and the offensive system are a lot better this year. I would say the defenses are similar.

OP brings an interesting point. 2013 was still a run first, control clock philosophy. A lot of those passing yards came on 3rd down in which LSU excelled because the players were so good. This year LSU is going about it completely different. Up tempo, pass first, just a different approach.

The 2013 D played decently at times. Let's hope this unit can do that at key moments. I have almost given up hope 2019 D will be a dominating force. Hope I'm wrong.

Landry & OBJ combined for 18 TDs in 2013. The 2013 team only had 22 receiving TDs total for the year (13 games)

Jefferson, Marshall, and Chase already have 16 receiving TDs (4 games).

The 2013 Defense was good, but it was the definition of 3rd & Chavis. The D constantly had huge meltdowns at critical times.

A noble, and very much appreciated endeavor.

I feel comfortable saying this offense is clearly better that 2013. Burrow's uncanny accuracy and pre-snap ability to read defenses is huge. Throw in the better coaching and I think its clear. But my one hesitation is the OL. And we won't know the answer to that until Florida and Auburn and especially Alabama (the by far biggest mismatch in the losing streak to Bama has been how badly dominated our OL has been by Bama's DL).

Defensive comparisons are harder. I think the talent is better with this year's team. I'm not sure how much of the current struggles are related to injuries, significantly more time on the field (scoring is always good, but defenses love 6-7 minute scoring drives, not these quick ones we're seeing), some complacency with having big leads. Bottom line is the tackling has been really inconsistent, which is not consistent for an LSU defense. And Delpit is flat out not playing well. Still feel like with the talent, it will come around.

George to me the main deal here is QB.

Mett was good to great at times (flawless in 2012 Bama game) but Burrow to me is on a different level. Burrow can read and go through progressions with the best of them (so far, I understand we have not played a badass defense) Mett still had a Les Miles blanket on top of him and the offense, Burrow has an innovator scheming him that has him in the Heisman conversation, is this real life?

Remember that this is national rank too. Offenses are scoring more than ever so the national rank then and now are a bit different.
