Better defense, comparable (In context of their own eras imo) offense

2019 has a better QB as the field general. In general I give the nod to this year’s squad, we are a legitimate title contender again for the first time since 2011

This is a better offense. QB is much better, WRs slightly worse, RBs a good bit worse. But the scheme and play calling is on a different level.

I think 2019 defense will eventually pull even or ahead of the 2013 defense on most areas. Still working out some things, imo.

The defense this year is concerning. Some of the issues will be fixed just by getting guys back healthy, but the busted coverages is definitely reminiscent of 2013.

Aranda is REALLY trying hard to play some zone (probably because of CB depth), but with a starting safety out, a true fresman cb and linebackers who are built to come downhill it hasn't quite worked out. The d-line has been great at stopping the run but not so much rushing the passer, which only magnifies the issues in the back end. I think we get some of those issues ironed out down the stretch when we get back healthy up front and more comfortable in the secondary.

I just really hope the defense gels quickly enough to make enough stops to win games when the offense lays the inevitable turd against one of these defenses coming up.

Good post...there are some similarities. However, this offense is light years beyond that 2013 offense, and as others have mentioned, we really haven’t seen our defense yet at full capacity due to injuries, etc.

Mett threw for 3082 yards in 2013 with a CP of 64.9%.

Through 4 games, Burrow has thrown for 1520 yards, with a CP of 80.6%. Even factoring in those numbers dropping against stiffer competition (and Joe staying in for those full games), it’s hard to imagine him not eclipsing Mett’s numbers by a lot.

Their talented for sure but I wouldn't go that far. Also I think that Mettenberger had a better arm, but I'd still take Burrow over Mett.

Why are you comparing it to how they are ranked nationally? That's misleading in my opinion.

Here's the difference:

OFFENSE
Total Offense : Yards per Game
2013 : 453.3
2019 : 563.8

DEFENSE
Total Defense Yards per Game
2013 : 340.7
2019 : 320

This 2019 Team is obviously performing better through 4 games.

Do you live in reality?

Pretty sure we've never seen the offense put up these kind of numbers through any set of games.

More talent distributed on defense.

The offense is much smoother and disciplined.

I don't think we've seen what the running game can do yet.

Special teams is just as good so far.

What are you talking about?

Do you mean to tell me that LSU's offense has always averaged 57.8 ppg, 432 passing ypg, and 4+ passing TDs per game?

If so, yes, I have forgotten that this LSU offense looks just like every other year.

Because YPG median numbers have shifted in the last 6 years - it's hard to compare yardage to yardage these days.

Just a gut feeling but I don't think this year's LSU team is losing to Ole Miss this year.

Right now everything is skewed because most power 5 teams have played mostly mid-majors and FCS teams, so stats will all look non-compare in the raw sense.

In the end still obviously way too early to draw any conclusions.

Half the starting defense has been injured since week 2. All but one are expected back for Florida game.

This defense is much better than the one in 2013. By season’s end, the numbers will back that up.

OBJ and Landry were great. The difference this season though is there is a third option. Having three wr's putting up the numbers they are, it's spreading and stressing the defenses more. The current offense isn't dependent on a running game. Thus they can move at a quicker pace as well.

Another thing is, Burrow is more accurate. OBJ and Landry bailed Mett out with super human catches. Burrow also has the ability to run. Mett could grow a beard faster than his 40 time.

The two offenses aren't really comparable at all.

Honestly I would say Burrow is the difference.
Mett was tough as nails and a gunslinger but Burrow has higher football IQ, is extremely accurate, is far more mobile in the pocket, sees the field so well, and plays pissed off. He is the kind off QB that always gives you a chance bc he wants to win so bad and has the tools to compete at highest level.

Play calling obviously a lot more creative/innovative this year

Those were great receivers in 2013 obviously but I would take the entire group we have now over them(and Jarvis Landry may be my favorite LSU player of all time).
Real question is will defense remain a collection of talented individuals or start to play as a dominant unit.

Wouldn’t mind having Jeramy Hill this year though

You sure create alot of threads.

The 2013 offense had more top heavy talent but absolutely no defense after losing 5 starters to the draft in 2012 and 4 starters to the draft in 2013.

This years team has much better play calling but they are scoring WAY too quickly and thus the defense is by defintion on the field longer and giving up more yards.

This team also has been playing without 3 DL and 1 LB for half of the year and the younger guys have struggled in moments.
