The drop off won’t be as bad as people here are hoping for. Stevens slides down full time to LB and Vincent moves to safety. I’ll wait to try and predict who plays where outside of those two for when I see who we hire as DC, but we have studs in the secondary that saw consistent playing time this year as freshman. Same with the line.

The O-line is really my only concern.

I'm interested to see what the New DC does with Jacoby Stevens. He played multiple positions all year

Replacing Phillips and Queen in the middle will be our toughest challenge. Damone Clark played in every game and finished with 50 tackles & was 3rd on the team in sacks, so having him back helps. Next to him will probably be Baskerville or Starks, but that's really it. The rest are true or RS freshman.

I'm guessing Chaisson's replacement will be Ray Thorton & Andre Anthony, two seniors, but haven't really done much or showed any flashes. Marcel Brooks (true frosh) was a better pass rusher than both.

At DB, Jacoby Stevens coming back is huge. He was 2nd on the team in tackles with 92. Flott played a TON this year at CB and there wasn't much dropoff when he took over for Fulton later in the year. Which is shocking considering he was a true freshman. We also have Vincent & Stingley coming back. And our starting safety Harris who tore his ACL back in September. And Hampton (true frosh) who really caught on towards the end of the year. This secondary reminds me of 2011 when we lost our All-American Thorpe winner (Peterson/Delpit) but were still absolutely stacked.

At DL, we return 2/3 starters. Neil Farrel will be a senior who played in every game last year and should take over for Lawrence. Everyone in the 2 deep has some game experience. Mostly true and RS freshman behind them. Alot depends on if we move to a 4-3 and how quickly our filthy 2020 DL recruiting haul contributes through the season.

D-Line should be fine with Shelvin, Logan, and Farrel all coming back. Also have Ika and some talented freshmen.

CB obviously have Stingley coming back. Ricks will be coming in as a top CB but I don't expect him to start right away. We had other guys like Flott get a quite a bit of time.

S should be good with Vincent, Stevens, Hampton, and Todd Harris coming back from injury.

LB will be thin experience wise. Baskerville, Clark, Anthony, and Brooks there with some being more pass rushers than true LBs. Also have some top notch freshmen coming in. I wouldn't mind seeing the new DC move Stevens down here since we should be set at Safety with the other guys.

LB corps. That’s what killed Bama last season and what killed us this year was losing our two starters that had serious experience.

this.

honestly though, Aranda's scheme was HIGHLY dependent on LBs cleaning up while the DLine at blocks.

Going to be very interesting what we run in 2020 and if we let the DLine make more plays since we lose so many backers.

A unit replacing 4 starters will be better?

That'd be something

a lot of people are thinking we will go from a 3-4 to a 4-3 with the personnel returning, so its not really a 1 for 1, our d line will be stout next year which would free up the linebackers to make plays. LB is definitely our biggest question mark though

They brought in a tall JUCO that I think the'd like to stick in Chaisson's spot.

Absolutely - and like us you guys have dudes waiting in the wings. Just curious who they are.

As another LSU poster noted, Saban and Bama have had to deal with this the last few years. The DL as others noted will be good (4 of the top 6 in the rotation are back plus Roy from Baton Rouge and Guillory from Alexandria, both dominated in the HS AA games will provide depth), the secondary getting Vincent back with Stingley and Flott, Hampton. Todd Harris who was having a breakout year his first 2 games before getting hurt (Starting FS) is back.

LB group is the? Clark #35 played big this year. Micah Baskerville played well in backup role and was a star on ST (he made some big plays in the Vandy game if you remember. Another name that I think can step up is D. Starks from John Ehret HS. he was a true freshman this year but clearing house issues prevented him from getting on campus till late August. Best LB in the state last year. Maybe Anthony (#46)and Thornton (#43) can have breakout Senior seasons as well. They have been solid backups.

Here's my starting group for next year in a 3-3-5 since we basically play that mostly:

DE: SR. Glen Logan
NT: JR. Tyler Shelvin
DE: SR. Neil Farrell Jr.
BOLB: SO. Marcel Brooks
MILB: JR. Damone Clark
WILB: JR. Micah Baskerville
CB1: SO. Derek Stingley
CB2: SO. Cordale Flott or FR. Elias Ricks
NB: SR. Kary Vincent
FS: SR. Todd Harris
SS: SR. Jacoby Stevens

Defensive line
Should be the unit's strength in terms of starters. Shelvin was an absolute beast this year at NT and Logan is a returning starter. Farrell was a "Backup" but had the most tackles of any defensive lineman on the roster with 46 tackles. Lots of experience in that group but the biggest question is how depth will look, we have as many as 11 or 12 backups on the DLine but almost all of them have little to no playing time outside of NT Siaki Ika.

Linebackers
We will be in a 3 LB look mostly like we were this year I imagine. The question is who replaces all those guys leaving, and at pass rush/edge spot, Marcel Brooks could be that a guy, a former 5-star. He's kind of like Jacoby Stevens though build wise (LB/S hybrid), so not sure if he fits in every down at that edge spot. He played a lot this year in 3rd down situations as we put 1 DLine and 4 LBs on the field. Clark is the most experienced guy and should be the leader in the LB unit next year, he had 50 tackles this season as a backup. Baskerville is probably the big question mark, after playing a decent bit as a freshman (18 tackles), he slipped off some this year (15 tackles), that spot will be interesting to see what happens there.

Secondary
Stingley there doesn't need to be much said about, the kid was an all american as a freshman, and not a freshman all american. Opposite him will likely be Cordale Flott or freshman 5-star Elias Ricks. Flott really showed out this year i nthe time given, was impressed by him being just a lowly 3-star coming out of high school and playing like he did. Jay Ward, Raydar Jones will also be battling for the CB spot opposite Stingley.

Vincent returning is huge, he's been the starting nickelback for 2 years now and going into his 3rd next season, it's also possible they move him outside and move someone else inside, but he's so comfortable playing that NB spot now. At times he will get beat, but he has so much speed and really got a lot better as this season went along.

At safety Stevens is a no brainer returner there, he's really a hybrid LB/S and they will probably continue to use him in that role, he had a huge year this year and we are lucky to have him back. The other safety spot I'm giving to Todd Harris Jr. right now. He started 1 game and played in 3 this year before going down with injury and missing entire season almost towards start of season. Cameron Lewis, Eric Monroe and Maurice Hampton will all be battling for that spot as well.

Rosenthal looked really good this year, I'm not that worried about OT as much as I am replacing everyone inside, Ingram at least got a lot of PT this year coming back at LG.

Still also dont love Deculus out at RT, he improved this season from 2018 for sure, but he will have his fair share of "Getting beat" moments...and Burrow really made it seem less of an issue than it was this season with his escapability.

LSU's defense is loaded with top of the line elite defensive talent. Obviously, LSU will simply just reload again. Next!

Don’t even play the same position. Brooks will rush the passer, but he’ll also line up at safety. Brooks is more a hybrid player like Simmons.

We don’t have anyone on our roster to replace Chaisson....yet.

Stevens returns and will be a big feature likely in blitzes. We have some really good front 7 guys coming in like Sampah and Webb at LB, Roy and Guillory at DT. Ricks the #1 CB may start immediately and McGlothern looked like the best defensive player at the all star game picking Bryce and another QB for a pick 6.

Not really. Damone Clark and Micah Baskerville are solid and their backups are stellar as well.

You seem to know what's going on.

What's the deal with Justin Thomas? You heard his name a lot in the earlier games before taking his leave. Is he coming back ?
