In the past year or two, we’ve seen plenty of programs showing the potential to take a big step forward. Here are five programs that are definitely on the rise.

5. Ole Miss

All aboard the Lane Train. The Rebels are poised for a swift turnaround under new coach Lane Kiffin, mostly due to the talent in the program. John Rhys Plumlee is one of the quickest quarterbacks in the country and has the chance to excite the Ole Miss faithful, especially since most of the offense is returning. That’s good news for a defense that was actually improved in 2019. If Kiffin can add some attitude, and players like Plumlee take a step forward, it won’t be a surprise if the Rebels turn some heads.

4. Tennessee

Tennessee’s rise may be a few years away, but if Jeremy Pruitt gets time, the future actually looks bright. The Volunteers have a solid 2020 recruiting class coming in, but the 2021 class actually ranks as one of the best in the nation. The Vols improved to 8-5 under Pruitt in his second season. They may be a top 25 program this season. If the recruits prove to be as good as advertised, they could be even better than that in two or three years. That means that the Vols may finally be on the way back toward the top of the SEC after a long hiatus.

3. Arizona State

2. Louisville

1. North Carolina

Not trying to being mean here but obviously Tennessee and Ole Miss are likely to rise. There isn’t a ton of room below for them to fall.

I haven’t seen this kind of hype for Ole Miss since 2009. Member how they shook up the BCS then?

This team isn't as good or well rounded as 2009. Also hopefully this coach is better than Nutt.

The game was 31-7 at the half. Do you think the D let up a little?

Kiffin didn’t do shite at UT or USC, two places that have far more resources than Ole Miss. Why does anyone think he’ll do any better in Oxford?

Because he did well at FAU with far less resources.

Also, he revamped Bamas stale arse offense.

He won his conference 2 out of 3 years he was at FAU with far less resources and helped Alabama win a few titles.

Plumlee was perfect fit for Rodriguez offense
I'm not sure he's the passer Kiffin can win with
He might end up using Coral more

Talent goes to the 09 team.

Coaching goes to the 2020 team.

I think 7-5 is the top for this team. Don’t see us magically pulling a bunch of upsets with no offseason to install and learn a new S&C program. 5-7 is more likely this year. Would be happy with anything over that.

He's won with sub par passers. Supposedly Plumlee has improved his throwing over the offseason (generally take these assertions with a grain of salt). I think the play calling and system wasn't conducive to proficient passing because they were running so much option.

JRP has a good shot but I think Corral or Tisdale will win out. JRP will find a way on the field with his speed regardless if it's at QB or another position.

I think one could argue that despite the outcome, the Rocky Block game in general was an interesting turning point in Lane Kiffin's career path.

quote:

He is an outstanding and creative offensive coach who has great experience both at the college and NFL level," Nick Saban said when announcing Kiffin's hiring. "He has a very good understanding of the game, and I have always been impressed with what I saw in the games he called."
