Exactly, a dying program in a talent poor state.

Your friend needs better sources. Nebraska is not going to make a play for Jim Tressel. No one is as a HC. He's got another 2 years remaining on his show cause. His next job is likely in administration.

Chris Peterson can - and if he wants to, will - do a lot better than Nebraska.

The only legit name on that list that Nebraska could get would be Kirby, but he has zero ties to the Midwest. His ideal HC coaching job is in the Southeast.

Besides, why in the world would Kirby take the NU job when everyone knows Saban is going to Texas the day after Bama's bowl game and Kirby gets the HC job at Bama?

If he gets the opportunity, he should go.

If there's one thing I've learned on the rant this year, it's the importance of Big Ten championships and Rose Bowl appearances on a coaching resume.

Probably would be a good hire for them, but I see them going for a spread guy next. They are not in fertile recruiting grounds, and it is easier to compete with lesser athletes using a HUNH or spread offense than a traditional pro style offense.

I guess the Alabama job was beneath a bunch of people too in 2006.

Nebraska ain't what it used to be... but college football is cyclical. It will never be mid-90's Nebraska again, the landscape has changed. BUT, they could be a decent program again.

It would take a great recruiter to get it done. Smart would be a splash hire, that's for sure. The fact that hiring a DC from the SEC with no HC experience would be a splash hire is pretty telling, however.

Then I hope he's prepared to be second fiddle for the rest of his life. Dude needs to cut the chord with Saban. If he wants an easy success job, go to Marshall or some lower level school and toil around for a few years before moving up. If Nebraska offers, he'd be a fool to decline.

At some point, he's got to think about taking the risk. There's no guarantee that he'll get Bama or UGA job in the future, which I think are the two that he "thinks he can succeed at." He's not getting a job at UF, UT, LSU, or FSU anytime soon. I guess USCe is a possibility, but he's severely limiting his options of he keeps holding out.

This, it's frickin nebraska, one of the 10 best programs of all time.

LSU sucked eggs in the 90s, actually UGA was pretty bad then too. Bama was bad from 00-06. Auburn has been garbage the past few years. Miami was a laughing stock for about half a decade. USC has been in flux after Carroll. Look at florida right now, or FSU after bowden left.

Just because they aren't great now doesnt' mean it's not a job that anybody who has never been a head coach before shouldn't jump at.

Serious question. If Saban were to leave would y'all promote smart to head coach or would y'all want him to go prove that he is a successful head coach else where and come back sort of like what Malzahn did? I feel like with names recent success that the higher ups wouldn't wanna take a chance on smart.

I'm sure some felt that way. A few key differences:

1) Alabama hadn't just changed conferences a couple of years earlier creating recruiting tie issues.
2) Alabama was - and is - located in a much more fertile recruiting ground.
3) Alabama was - and is - in a much better conference.
4) Alabama was - and is - a much better job historically than Nebraska.
5) Probably most significant for a potential coach, Alabama was willing to pay top salary and reinvest into facilities. Nebraska's next HC won't make more than $3M per year.

I agree with this wholeheartedly, BUT do play devils advocate..he may be leery of what happened with muschamp. They both had similar DC backgrounds, then muschamp gets the keys to a new ferrari and 3 years later is in danger of being fired and nobody in the fanbase likes him. Kirby might not want that much pressure off the bat.

But like I said, if nebraska offers he should take it immediately.

He will get a look, no doubt. I know a lot of Bama fans aren't crazy about that. I think it would depend on the context in which Saban left, too.

I know Kirby thinks it's his job when Saban leaves.

Bama will likely be attractive to a lot of top candidates, though, so Kirby isn't likely the slam dunk to get it that he thinks he is.

That said, a lot of schools have had success moving an asst into the HC role (Chip Kelly, Chris Peterson, and David Shaw all come to mind).

Kirby sticking around makes me think Saban might be getting close to the end. I think he's retiring or trying the NFL again, I don't think he goes to Texas.

Muschamp was the clear heir at Texas and when it was clear Brown wasn't going anywhere he took the Florida gig.

Nebraska is a good job, not a great one. If he (KS) gets offered and doesn't take it it says to me one of two things:

-He knows of a better offer somewhere:
Texas AM if Sumlin goes to USC?
Michigan if hoke is ousted?
Oklahoma has been under performing for like 5 years now?

-He knows Saban's time is coming to an end soon and wants to be there to take it, which I certainly understand.

Some people seem to think he'd get the job. Personally, I hope not. As far as I'm concerned, there's no need for Bama to hire unproven head coaches.
