Kirby Smart would be an attractive candidate, no doubt, because of the continuity factor. He would also be a risk, because of the lack of head coaching experience and the unique pressure of Alabama.
I am not saying Smart would be a poor choice, but definitely a risky one and everything needs to be considered. I wouldn't want to hire him just because we are happy with where things stand and assume we would be getting the next Nick Saban.

Which is true, but Saban's influence is profound right now. And Kirby has the advantage of actually working under Saban for however many years he's been on Saban's staff (he did DBs at LSU for a couple years, right?)
yeah, he coached DBs for one year at LSU. However, other than Jimbo, Saban's coaching tree hasn't fared too well as HCs. Derek Dooley and Muschamp have been utter failures when given big time opportunities. Sunseri was also an abortion of a DC at Tennessee after being on staff with Saban for years. Honestly, every defensive coach Saban has ever had has looked like a genius while with him, but plenty have been less than stellar without him.

Also true. Dooley should never have happened (though I suspect the Vince name was almost as important as the Nick one) and Muschamp...well, I'm not going to judge that one yet. Terrible year with injuries after a pretty damned good one. Sunseri went down with Dooley, of course. Shouldn't have left Saban's staff.
All-in-all, though, I suspect Saban's recommendation will still resonate very strongly with the Bama administration. It's human nature. Look at how many Bama-associated coaches they went through after the Bear before (and after) hiring a home-run in Gene Stallings.

Couldn't agree more. Nebraska is a coach killer. People still look at that job in 1995 eyes. There is no - NONE - talent in that state. And fans and media still hold onto the idea it's a Top 25 program. Nebraska is Iowa State with outlandish expectations.
Wouldn't touch that job with a 10 foot pole.

Kirby Smart is involved in defensive gameplanning at a level no DC under Saban has ever been. That includes Muschamp. He calls the Defense on Saturdays. Yes, it is Saban's D, but to say that Smart is nothing more than a glorified position coach is laughable and would lead one to believe you have zero clue what you are talking about.

Oh. Nevermind. This removes all doubt and proves you have no clue.

Smart has had more than enough legitimate bcs offers to leave the safety of sabans wing. He's scared. He's been with dad so long it's scary to get your own house and move out and only a real man will do it. Muschamp through all his faults has succeeded and failed on his own accord. Kirby is succeeding off sabans recruiting sabans gameplanning sabans scheme sabans discipline. I mean I'm not saying I blame him he's got an easy salary till Saban retires and every so often Saban will pat junior on the head and tussle his hair by saying his name in a press conference.

Have you ever met Kirby Smart in your life? Have you ever had a conversation with him? Do you know anyone who actually knows him in real life? Do you know how he's viewed in the coaching community and/or by athletic administrators? If you could answer "yes" to any or all of the above questions your view would be different.
I'm not saying Kirby is the next HC at Bama or even that I want him to be. I am saying the man is not yet 40 and he's making $1M+ per season. He's in a position to wait for the PERFECT opportunity - particularly if he thinks that opportunity comes in 4 years or less.

Serious question. If Saban were to leave would y'all promote smart to head coach or would y'all want him to go prove that he is a successful head coach else where and come back sort of like what Malzahn did? I feel like with names recent success that the higher ups wouldn't wanna take a chance on smart.
When you can afford a Super Ferrari P4/5 that costs $5million, why give it to a guy that's never driven alone behind the wheel?

Different circumstances. DuBose was primarily a D-Line coach. He only had one year experience as a coordinator. The AD at the time was weak and caved to idiot fan pressure and hired DuBose when he was NOT ready.
Kirby is ready, but he may not get the job. Also, don't let coordinators being promoted bug you too much. Chip Kelly, Chris Peterson, David Shaw, and Jimbo Fisher are all examples of situations were it CAN work.
That said, Bama will at least explore all options when the time comes in a few years.

I hope y'all hire him...will show y'all have learned absolutely nothing from the Saban hire....Kirby may be the second coming of bill belicheck but by refusing to go out on his own he's painted himself as a scared toddler.
1 mil is nothing for a hc now ulls coach makes about that and smart could do way better than that. It's just what you do if you are a young up and coming champion you get out of the shadow. That is assuming you have the stones to do so

Again...Not saying Smart gets the job. Just saying that there are reasons why he hasn't left yet. He could have had the USM job a couple of years ago. That AD is borderline insane and he was wise to not take the job that Ellis Johnson eventually regretted taking. If he only cared about getting a good SEC HC job he could have taken a different approach to AU and Tennesse last year. I can assure you Kirby is not "scared" to leave. He just isn't in a hurry to do so at 38 years old.
Les Miles got his first HC job at 48 years of age. Was he "scared" to get one before then?
If Bama has a coaching hire to make in a couple of years there is one important lesson we've learned - Based on the stockpile of talent that Saban will have left, we could hire a guy at a state's second tier school with a career win percentage below .600 and still be fine.

This x1000. There is no comparison to the two situation. Dubose got the job because fans remembered good ole number 54. Smart has been under the tutelage of the best for several years and does his own game planning.

so what's the excuse for hiring shula then?
we'll see how it all plays out... the AD now will probably not be the one who eventually makes the decision... but Smart will be Saban's hand picked choice to replace him, and who at UA is gonna tell NS no?

If NS bolts and goes to Texass, then I doubt very seriously the BOT or the Chancellor/President or AD will do anything more than consider Nick's suggestion for replacement, and they will decide on their own who to hire. They won't feel an obligation to hire Nick's guy if Nick's coaching elsewhere.
Now, of NS becomes the AD at Bama then he can hire whoever the hell he feels can do the job..........

Nutt was Saban's recommendation for LSU Good thing him and Skip hated each other

His tenure as Bama's quarterback aside, he's a child of the Don. You don't ever say no to a child of the Don on the day of his daughter's wedding. Or...something. I have to re-watch The Godfather. I think I'm getting something mixed up here.

I don't mean this the wrong way, but how old are you? Shula was hired in MAY of 2003. If you are 22 or under then you may not remember the circumstances. Shula was hired after Mike Price was fired without having ever coached a game. It is very difficult to hire a great coach in MAY.
quote:

If this is true, then it means the decision wont be make for another 4-5 years. If that is the case, then Smart will not still be the DC. He's coach somewhere within 3 years - if it is the right job then maybe after this year.

ut Smart will be Saban's hand picked choice to replace him, and who at UA is gonna tell NS no?
Depends on circumstances behind Saban's exit. If Saban retires then his opinion will be very strongly considered. If the unlikely happens and he leaves for another coaching job then his opinion will likely not have nearly as much weight.
