It came to a head in the UF game when the TV camera picked up Gus yanking Joey back to the sideline when it was obvious the kid had the understanding that it was his time on the field
That was against LSU, and many said that was the final straw.

Gus isn’t the only one having to deal with QB’s leaving, other big time programs and coaches are having to learn too.
The biggest gripe amongst AU fans, was people found it hard to believe JG would do any worse than Nix was doing in some of those games. Atleast try JG to give a spark rather than watch Nix implode and lose confidence.

I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I don't get it... the guy is supposed to be some great QB, but flat out lost his starting role at Auburn ...beaten out by a true Freshman everyone across the conference makes fun of. Gatewood gets to UK and is now supposed to be a threat to the SEC.
He did not have what it takes to start at Auburn, quits on the team, now he is gonna be a top tier QB at UK? The dude has no grit and will land with an overwhelming thud.
Even if Gatewood was good in practice (not saying he was or wasn't), his chances of getting in front of Nix were practically zero. It's no secret Gus sold his soul to get Nix to come to auburn and promise him playing time from the start. Nix struggled most of the season and we still never really saw Gatewood get a chance, but we all know Gus wasn't budging from his 5-star freshman. Gatewood never stood a real chance there, regardless of how Nix was playing really.

Newspaper headline, "Gatewood quits on team". Reality is, he read the tealeaves that he was never gonna get a shot to play QB at Auburn and decided to move on. Joe Burrow was a "quitter" as well at one point by that context. I'll take a quitter like that anytime.
The 2 schools don't seem to have any issues with how things went down so why should we care? Gatewood is not even starting at Kentucky.

You are comparing Gatewood to Burrow?

Pretty sure he's just comparing the situations in that being labeled a "quitter" by one fanbase (and from all accounts, that's a small minority of that fanbase) doesn't mean the kid won't be successful at the next stop.
Please don't turn that into a "OMG THE RANT SAYS GATEWOOD WAS THE NEXT BURROW".

got ripped apart for reporting the gentleman’s agreement between Malzahn and Stoops. They are friends and golf together at SEC media days in Destin. The whole thing makes perfect sense. I think it’s commendable for both guys. Two class acts coming together to do what’s best for the kid without taking a competitive advantage against his previous team
If you don't use every advantage to help your team win, then you are not doing your job as a coach and need to be fired.
This BS agreement only benefits one team, is Auburn going to bench their starting QB? No, Stoops should be fired on the spot if he refuses to play Gatewood.

What you don’t get is — Nix is a legacy. Meaning his father played at Auburn. Built in advantage.
This is hilarious to me. As if Nix only won the QB job because his dad played QB at Auburn

Sure.. a whole coaching staff is putting their jobs on the line, AD putting the meal ticket of the entire athletic department on the line by naming an inferior Bo Nix the starter last year.. because.. his dad played QB there in the 90's

I have a legitimate source because he played for Auburn tell me Joey had problems getting past the first read so there is some truth to him getting beat out by a true Freshman.

The main reason Gatewood is eligible is because of Auburn/Gus's assistance

Thankfully Mark Stoops was born a ginger and didn't have to give up anything.

Yes he got beat out by the better player. Best of luck to Joey but to believe a 7 million dollar coach from Arkansas would play a lesser player because his dad once QB'ed at AU is hilarious

I don't know that anyone is saying Nix got the job just because of his Dad.
But if it came down to a tight competition between him and Gatewood, it's not a stretch to think Nix may have had the edge because of his connections to the program.

Nix was a 5 Star QB in 2019 according to Rivals. He led Pinson Valley to back-to-back state championships.
Joey Gatewood was a 2018 4 Star coming out of high school. He led his team to the 2017 Florida High School Finals, but fell short.
Joey Gatewood had a 12 month head start on Bo Nix for the starting job. Bo Nix won the starting job as a true Freshman and went on to win the first game of the 2019 season, his first Div-1 game, on national television against one of the upper tier teams from the PAC 12. He would go on to beat A&M in College Station and beat Bama ...one of the toughest teams in the nation who's on a dynastic run. The 3 regular season losses were to the No. 10 Florida Gators, No. 2 LSU Tigers, & No. 4 UGA Bulldogs. Joey Gatewood's contribution was to quit the team.
So... Nix is somehow NOT the better option only because of his "daddy?" I am not suggesting for a minute Nix is going to se the world on fire in 2020. However, I think it's crazy to assume Nix should take a backseat to Joey Gatewood or anyone else. It appears to me he's earned the right to take the helm at Auburn. Meanwhile, I think it's crazy to assume Joey Gatewood is going to run the table and be the next Cam Newton. He couldn't win the starting job at Auburn for all the reason I explained above.
What am I missing?
