I heard from a non link source that the NCAA cleared him, but there was a holdup from the SEC. They also mentioned the gentlemen’s agreement between KY and AU. Let me just say. LET THE KID PLAY. If he beats us, so be it. He wasn’t going to get to start at Auburn, so let him start at Kentucky if he’s won the job.

So it sounds like everyone is in agreement. I see no reason not to go ahead with this plan.

(FTR, I don’t actually see him getting major minutes even if he’s cleared.)

I got ripped apart for reporting the gentleman’s agreement between Malzahn and Stoops. They are friends and golf together at SEC media days in Destin. The whole thing makes perfect sense. I think it’s commendable for both guys. Two class acts coming together to do what’s best for the kid without taking a competitive advantage against his previous team.

Stoops said on his Monday show that he expects an answer this week, and he expects it to be a yes. So, something is up.

I don't see them moving Gatewood in front of Wilson - I believe the job is Wilson's to lose and he'll have a long leash. The team seems to be behind him, and he was looking good last year before he got hurt.

We'll see.

I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I don't get it... the guy is supposed to be some great QB, but flat out lost his starting role at Auburn ...beaten out by a true Freshman everyone across the conference makes fun of. Gatewood gets to UK and is now supposed to be a threat to the SEC.

He did not have what it takes to start at Auburn, quits on the team, now he is gonna be a top tier QB at UK? The dude has no grit and will land with an overwhelming thud.

What you don’t get is — Nix is a legacy. Meaning his father played at Auburn. Built in advantage.

Now Auburn coaches and fans will deny any advantage - but - if it walks like a duck.....

End result is that Gatewood got pushed aside.

I guess the gentlemen’s agreement is unique and all.

But if I were Kentucky, I’d scrap that if gatewood could win.

Slightly different scenario, but LSU lost Rick clausen to Tennessee and it was one of the most infuriating games I’d seen.

Coaching was horrendous but we allowed clausen to go Crazy on short passes.

But les miles called a timeout to stop the clock on a 4th down turnover. Pissed me off so bad.

I ripped you.

Im very surprised that Gus would GAF if Gatewood plays or not. Im sure our defense would love to get after him.

If the gentlemen's agreement ends up being true, I will eat crow

The more likely scenario is that Gatewood isn’t ready. If he goes in, couple of plays at most.

Post below you explains it all. No qb on that roster had a chance once Nix got there. Maybe Nix is that good, which wouldn't mean Gatewood is bad but more likely is that Gatewood knew the fix was in regardless of what he can or can't do.
Will hedge by saying I don't believe Gatewood is very good and never have. There's a reason quite a few schools quit recruiting him outright and some asked him to play other positions.

This is silly. Nix is a good QB but he also had an edge because of his pre-existing connections to Auburn. And given Gatewood is just a class ahead of Nix, that meant he was likely going to be holding a clipboard for the rest of his college career.

You’re being a huge homer if you’re blaming the kid for transferring somewhere that he will get PT after Wilson leaves this year (and maybe even this year IF Wilson doesn’t fully recover from his injury).

In hind-sight, Gatewood should've left Auburn the minute Nix hit campus. But he believed his coach and Gus played it to his advantage, saying Gatewood was too good to not be on the field. Gus designed specific plays tailored for Joey and promised him he'd play every game when the situation called for the designed plays.

In reality, when Nix struggled vs UF and a situation arose where Gatewood knew he'd go in to get the yardage needed.....Gus yanked his arse back on the sideline. At that point, everyone knew the deal & Gatewood made the decision to move on.

I don't see how you say he quit on the team, when Gus literally quit on him.

Wish Joey all the best and I'm glad that AU helped him with his appeal but he couldn't even start in high school. He seemed to have a very beta personality compared to Nix even as a true freshman.

Technically he did quit, but it’s understandable that he wasn’t going to sit behind Nix for 4 years, especially after remaining loyal to Gus/AU for so long, but the transfer portal will continue to see guys move.

It also frustrated many within the fanbase that Nix was noticeably shaken and struggling in several games last year (Oregon, UF, LSU, UGA), but Gus wouldn’t put JG in.

Technically Gus made promises to the kid so that he'd have two QB's going into the season. And every HC would've have done the same.

Statements were made that Gus had tailored specific plays for Joey in the offensive scheme. When Nix stumbled a few times and struggled to move the ball, Gus could've put Joey in to let Bo take a breather and see the field from the sideline, Gus chose to leave Bo in and sit Joey in those situations. It came to a head in the UF game when the TV camera picked up Gus yanking Joey back to the sideline when it was obvious the kid had the understanding that it was his time on the field.

Gatewood technically quit the team, but I don't see how an AU fan could be pissed about it or claim he will be a thud.

Gentlemen's agreement my arse. Put him in first series and let him throw right at Gus on the sidelines. Now he'll have to aim three or four coaches down from Gus to hit him but he'll have the adjustment made by third down.
