Is there really any good reason for teams like Bama to have 3 cupcake games a year?

2 is ok but 3? 25% of your schedule is made up of cupcakes?

They are boring for the fans, not fun for the cupcake teams and just a waste of time generally.

Notice I'm not even counting the Duke game here. I'm talking about NM State, Southern Miss and Western Carolina.

Cupcake games give you a good opportunity to work out the kinks in areas that you're still unsettled on. For example, let's say a team has 4 new DL starters. In that case it's better that they get some experience against Louisiana-Lafayette in a game that you'll win than against Notre Dame where the lack of experience may cost you. You can also play a lot of reserves in those cupcake games and give them some experience, thus building your depth. Plus your team isn't as tired down the stretch as they might be if they played Notre Dame and Michigan (along with an SEC schedule). Also, it might not be fun for the cupcake teams but their AD's sure don't mind bringing home one million dollars that those games bring in. Finally, fans may want those big name OOC opponents but wait until you lose one of them. That'll change real quick.

I'd rather do like the Big Ten. Play all your OOC games in September and then the rest of the year be SEC...When I see a mid year or late year OOC cupcake game on the schedule, it frickin blows. Might as well be an off week.

Earlier in the year OOC games people are still excited no matter the opponent.

I'd really rather seem them expand the playoff, subtract regular season to 11 meaningful games (9 SEC, 2 Power 5)...Cupcake OOC are pointless nowadays. These kids practice year round, they don't need cupcakes to warm up anymore.

3? More like 12, including shitty SEC teams like LSU.

Have you seen Clemson's schedule? If I'm any team with a solid chance to sniff the playoff, I'm seriously considering eliminating OOC power 5 games and cruising through the season.

50% of Clemson's schedule is filled with cupcakes. Hell, their Conference title game was against a team that finished with 7 losses...

And I'm not dissing Clemson. Just saying you can't hit the folks who lose the NC for scheduling when the actual champions play exactly 1 real game next year. . . maybe 1.5.

I don’t object to the cupcakes. Every team needs practice teams and breathers.

But Bama’s consistent contenders are LSU, aTm, and Auburn in the West.
They scheduled byes in front of aTm and LSU.

Also it was 2007 when Alabama’s permanent “rival” Tennessee last won the SEC East.

Since then:
LSU’s, Florida 4Xs
Auburn’s, Georgia 4Xs
Arkansas’, Missouri 2Xs
A&M’s, South Carolina 1X

And Tennessee in that same time period has 8, yes EIGHT, losing SEC seasons, and only 1, yes ONE, winning SEC season (5-3).

Bama consistently has the easiest SEC West road to the SEC Championship slingshot to the Naty. That’s why Saban wouldn’t go to Texas or any other school without the Bama SEC advantage.

Alabama is 15-3 vs those teams since 2007

Alabama is 14-1 vs those teams since 2009

Alabama is 11-0 vs Florida and Georgia since 2009.

But please, continue

0&8 isn't a consistent contender by any stretch of the imagination

If 10 points in 3 years is contending, then okay.
