Spurrier & Bowden were both potential "hires" at LSU, if we're playing "what if's"

Bowden was not a "what if", he had told his assistants to pack for T'town.

Alabama was his dream job, the only reason he was not the coach is the BOT and President Thomas told him to wait until they interviewed others. Bowden expect (rightfully) that they were going to hire him.

Coach Bowden was a HUGE Alabama fan. He even kept a scrapbook on it until he died.

To an extent. But I think you are overplaying it.

Miles was a decent coach that was handed the keys to a well stocked program. What ended up killing him was his inability to change with the times.

You are kidding yourself thinking that 4 years of Nick blessed the program to the point it’s the main reason for chugging along 20 years later.

Not to mention, Bo Rein (RIP) never coached a game at LSU and he was potentially a grand slam hire.

Now that I agree with. I remember the day when Coach Rein went missing. Tragic

Coach Saban stocked the LSU program but what he really did for LSU was a major overhaul of the athletic program. New buildings, practice fields, academic tutors, new way to recruit "The Bottom", etc. all led to LSU's rise and continued success.

LSU was never even a consistent SEC title contender before Saban, and now they are pretty consistent, so yeah, his impact at LSU is still relevant due to the fact that recruits think of LSU as a contender.

I would agree to an extent but anything Saban put in place is nearly 20 years old now.

In college football, you have to be constantly improving to stay relevant and so far, LSU has.

15-0 to 5-5 and 5-6 isn't constant improvement

I'm talking program wise, such as with facilities and other innovations.

was just going by "constant" and of course, in that respect, no team is constantly improving. I won't be surprised if georgia loses a regular season game this year. That got lucky that Cristobal left Oregon for Miami in the off season.

Had an SEC title each decade except 30s and 90s. Over .500 conference record all-time. Obviously they were consistently a contender.

Firing an NC winning Coach 2 years later illustrates LSU ain't going back to losing.

True that the SEC was two top teams like it is now, replacing UF with UGA, but he makes 1992 look like the outlier when Alabama was one point away from a victory against Florida during the 90's. SEC won 3 titles in the 90's.

Meh, alabama won a lot before Saban. Saban had to rebuild because of sanctions. Don’t forget, gene stallings won a national title at Bama. Look at his record coaching other than Bama ??

I didn't realize they both had once interviewed for the LSU job. Bowden later on said he thought Alabama called him to offer him the job but instead they made him go through an interview process which turned him off.

AL has had two great coaches & 2 really good coaches historically. And the great coaches they’ve had for near 40 years combined. That’s the difference.

Tenn has had 1 great coach and 2 really good coaches.

Georgia has had 3 really good coaches (Butts, Dooley, & Richt), and the jury is out on Kirby being good or great.

Florida has had two great coaches but only had them for 15 years combined.

LSU has had 4-5 good coaches…and 1 who could have been great had he been there longer (Saban).

Auburn has had 4 good coaches.

So it depends if AL’s next hire is a good coach or a great coach. History seems to indicate they’ll hire 2-3 good HC’s lasting 4-5 years each before they hire the next great HC.

Personally I think Alabama will be just fine after Saban. He’s built that program too good for it to not atleast compete.

Insert CEO and watch that baby collapse.

Averages make the picture appear a little more optimistic than it actually was.

Alabama won one national title in 30 years

And you make it sound less optimistic than it actually was. There was 13 yrs post Bryant before 1992, then 17 yrs until Saban. Bama averaged one national title in less than a generation even when crippled by NCAA infractions, most of which were self inflicted. But those are the facts...Bama will still win at a high level post Saban. But not likely at the same level after a few seasons beyond his departure.
