If you were a fan in the 90s you never thought that could ever happen and the level of success Dinardo had for 3 years was about the best you could hope for. We always lost the big game.

Saban turned that around in his 2nd year vs. Tennessee in the SECCG and in 2003 everyone picked us to lose to defending champion UGA in both games. . It wasn’t even a consideration that Saban could do that in 4 years. We would have been happy with another Shreveport Bowl.

Even though I thought we would win because that was one of the best defenses ever, it was unreal to see it actually happen when the clock ticked down to zero in the Dome.

There’s a great video of College Gameday in Baton Rouge for that one with everybody very fired up that morning with the SEC West within our grasp. Man that Dinardo tenure was filled with almost’s. Could never get over the hump and even up until the end losing to Alabama on the last play. Such a huge change when we actually won the big games with Saban.

A lot of shitty ones in the early 90s. I do have good memories throwing the football on campus but I think I just blocked out the games themselves. The first time I remember was ‘93 I think when we beat Bama earlier in the year and were trying to be bowl eligible at 5-5-1 in the final home game against Arkansas and got smoked. It’s amazing they ever recovered from those dark times.

As a fan, I guess you get more good games on the schedule, but then you have teams whose weaknesses have been exposed due to playing too may tough opponents and being soft like OU and Bama. Or A&M, who is on the downswing by the end of the season and chokes like always. So we get embarrassed and you’re relying on an upstart like ‘Ol Miss beat the best teams in the country, when their head coach doesn’t even want to stick around b/c well it’s ‘Ol Miss.
