Is Defensive decline unavoidable?

We made fun of The Big 12 for years; but now we are seeing the staples of defensive football: Alabama and LSU, take steps back as they have implemented high powered wide open attacks of their own.
These teams still have a lot of talent on D and can hold down middle of the road teams… but against good QB and personnel with a spread attacks they get lit up.
Is that just how football is these days?
9-6 was a bit too much but 46-41 for LSU and Alabama is hard to digest.

It happened in the NFL. What makes NCAA FB so special that it doesn’t

Once the generational QB’s are gone, it’ll probably be more of a 35-17 LSU type of game. So no worries

I believe so. The WRs and QBs just keep getting better. It's hard to keep pace with these guys.

I was thinking the defenses would catch back up to the spread offenses just like they did the old run and shoot offenses back in the day but I'm not so sure now. The run and shoot was kind of a flash in the pan but the spread seems to be here to stay

Football seems to be cyclical. When the Wishbone was all the rage no one could stop it, but teams eventually figured out how to deal with it.
Before that, teams were throwing it all over the place. Scott Hunter at Alabama still holds the most passing yards in a game set in 1969..484 vs Auburn and they lost.
Defenses will catch up. IMO linebacker play is the key, better athletes with more speed at these positions.

It took a while at LSU but yeah good point. Also rules changes plays a role. Ds would T off on QBs and hit them a lot just a few years ago, they are a lot more protected these days.

The rules continue to help offense so it's likely.

I think Neither team has the DL they’re used to in their best defensive years
The only way to really stop these offenses when they’re playing well is with a huge pass rush from your front 4

I’d agree with this. As long as linemen are allowed five yards down the field, RPO spread will thrive.

This.
Clemson last year and Auburn this year seem to have the defensive formula - dominant D line that can wreck shite without having to blitz. Auburn's offense just left the defense out to dry.

I’ll also point out Miss State last year had 2 first round DL.
Held Alabama to 24
And you need not just edge guys but guys who can collapse a pocket.

If you are playing an RPO team. wouldn't you tell your safeties and linebackers not to bite on the play action?
If I were playing Bama, I'd stay back and force them to run the ball, don't let them throw the slants. I'm not biting on the play action and letting those greyhounds get behind me.
Make them beat me running the ball, which I don't think they really want to try and do.

I genuinely think it has more to do with offenses being great than with defenses being bad.
Maybe you will see some coach figure out a way to counter it, but these teams are stacked with weapons on offense — hard to account for all that when they can steal a huge chunk on any given play and in a variety of ways.
Even when teams do good things against LSU, Burrow extends the play or picks up 4-? yards on the ground. They have not really been slowed down to date — not even when AU came out with a brand new scheme they had tailored to play LSU.

I don’t see it changing back. WRs no longer have to worry about being lit up over the middle. QBs are more protected than ever. Not to mention that holding is so prevalent it’s just laughable.

Defence still matters. If it didn't OU would have plenty of wins over all of the squads with great defences who have won over the past 20 years.

Defense matter
But are there any elite defenses this year?
Maybe UGA maybe Auburn.

How would you explain Alabama going up 28-0 on Oklahoma last year? Also, if the defenses would limit opponent's 1st down conversions then they could give themselves a rest. Sometimes the defensive staff and players are mostly if not solely responsible for their inability to slow or stop the opposing offense.
