But do you think it is more likely that 5 of the top 11 defenses are from the Big 10 because the Big 10 is just so dominant at defense or because there is maybe 1 good offense in the whole conference, and Ohio State doesn't have to play them outside of practice.

That certainly plays into things but when a team holds every opponent well below their averages it's tough to deny that they have a dominant defense.

The Ohio State defense is fast. Really fast and fast at all positions. They've also adapted a hybrid position this season which adds additional speed in run and pass support.

You're right about not having to play a defense like that outside of practice. One side effect is that it has made the offensive line nasty. Those guys are maulers.

Ohio State is the real deal, but I am interested to see how the defense holds up against an Elite offense. And that’s not something you will see until the playoffs.

I’ve also always felt like OSU is the best job in sports.

Tons of instate talent. No instate rival. And your neighbors dknt have anywhere close to that talent.

I'm guessing you meant to say offense.

Use the following two NFL rules:

1. OL can't go more than 1 yard beyond the LOS on passing plays.

2. OL can't release downfield to block for screens until the ball is in the air.

That'll fix a lot of this stuff.

Defenses will catch up. IMO linebacker play is the key, better athletes with more speed at these positions.

I believe this is why Aranda recruits over half of the LBs at LSU as LB/Safety hybrids. Marcel Brooks and Jacoby Stevens as examples. But they still haven't caught up, yet.

When you have fast/high scoring offenses, it is unavoidable that the defensive stats will suffer.

Auburn went to the NC game twice with a rank of 49 in 2010 and 46 in 2013. That is total team D. Not sure what Scoring D was both those years.

This year we have a stout D, but our offense struggles to score in big games. I think we learned fast/high power offenses scoring points wins games/championships, defense is there to help get the O the ball, and help that the opposition doesn't score more.

I know new info right?

I just mean it isn't imperative to have a top ten D. Look at LSU this year. Yeah they gave up 41 to Bama, but won and still undefeated.

This is just projecting because LSU and Alabama's defensive units are not elite like they have been recently. Yes a ball control approach will help keep your D fresh, but it also limits your upside against the top 5 teams that have a pulse on defense.

UGA and Auburn's D are elite. Clemson and Ohio State show that you can have a high powered offense with an elite defense.

Alabama's problem is not that they have a high powered offense, but that they have suffered a rash of injuries and have missed on some recruits. LSU's problem is that their DL isn't quite elite.

Listen if your not getting a push with your front 4 it becomes a lot easier to pick up a Blitz.

And teams are good at attacking blitzes.
