The Chad Morris hire absolutely destroyed that program.

They were already sinking before then. His hire was proof of how far the program had fallen after the previous coach was poached from what was then a top P5 program.

The motorcycle accident was the obvious inflection point as they were fairly successful before that incident. But even that I think was coincidence.

Really what killed Arky football was the world shifting around them in directions that hurt them.

First of all was early conference realignment. They had hopes that A&M joining would have gotten them back into Texas recruiting, but not only did that not happen but A&M was successful enough from the start to push them down the SEC West pecking order. Also during this period they got stuck playing a Mizzou every year that had what is now obviously their best coach all-time. This all put Bert in a big hole.

Next was a shift in the SEC to faster offenses and less power football. Arky had been successful being an outlier with its offense, but soon Auburn and Ole Miss on top of the two aforementioned Big 12 teams were feeding Arky its own old medicine but with better recruits at the EXACT time Bert wanted to shift back to power football.

Next was the shift to ADs being more the front man for college athletics over coaches, and Arky suffered because its long-term AD was at the forefront of this shift. Instead of building funds for the AD Jeff Long was too busy giving interviews or lobbying to be on the College Football Playoff Committee.

Then came NiL which Arky which is a disaster for Arky. Their AD has made it clear they don't have donors willing to step into that fold, and that means Arky fell behind almost immediately in the NiL era with no chance to catch up.

Sure Chad sucked, but he was hired because better choices didn't want the job. This was confirmed when they had to hire Pittman afterwards because no coach with a realistic shot at a Power 5 job would go near the program- everyone could see how bad off it was.

Ironically, Arky on paper should be in a good place: they get to play Texas every year which hypes up the fans, they are in the best conference for football, the playoffs make it easier than ever to get into the post-season and NiL means the big brands around the state can theoretically pitch in. But Walton's kids went to Mizzou, and Jerry has enough problems running his Cowboys, which means there is no one to take their mantel in this new era. Hence the pivot to basketball.

Bama has been to the CWS finals twice, vs Texas & vs LSU.

I know Arkansas has been at least once, vs Oregon State.

bama has been there 5 times, while Arky has been there 12 times. If the ole internet is accurate.

What really has killed Arkanas it in state talent drop.

From 95-2010 Arkanasa produced many many SEC/NFL caliber players.
From 2010 unitl now it has dropped drasticly.

I bet I could list the top 100 players from Ark during that period and couldnt find 10 the last 15 yrs that would break into that group.

in 02 we had three of the top backs in the country instate. One went to Ark, 1 to Tenner and the best of ended up at Memphis and a long stint in the NFL. DeAngelo WIlliams.

Nutt always had a physical Oline mostly from Ark. Little Rock has let he UA down bigly lately.

Arkansas’ last three coaches were Bret Bielema, Chad Morris, and Sam Pittman.

They had a combined record of 65-86 overall, 25-72 in SEC play.

Never would have thought they miss John L Smith.

You obviously do not know any hog fans. They only lose because of the officials. That is why they lost to Arizona in the tournament

Somebody should do a full case study on the drop off of Arkansas high school football.

JJ Andrew’s is the perfect example

Son of legendary hog football player, multi time nfl pro bowler…

And he’s a 5* basketball player

Oh, well, the last time that happened in 1997, LSU defeated Alabama 13-6 to capture the 4th of their 8 national championships.

The piggies should just fold the program and admit they are a track school.

I think Arkansas is the last sleeping giant,

We've always had a terrifying upside in baseball and basketball, if we could only learn to get out of our own way. Football, not so much. Arkansas football struggled for political reasons a lot of people outside the state don't see, so the backyard pool of talent isn't really there. And in the age of NIL this should theoretically be less of an issue, but we've made it beyond clear that we have no interest in ponying up the money, and the fan base has no interest in hitting the misguided administration where it hurts. We're no more a sleeping giant than Nebraska is anymore. We ARE better than struggling to go to consistent bowl games, so at this point my only explanation is we're somehow infested with double agents.

Any team in Texas or Florida failing to emerge or remeerge is a lot more fascinating than Arkansas: failure to launch, imo.
