I am quite happy that Auburn did not hire Jon Sumrall

Dodged a bullet there. The Gators are going to be a force this year in the SEC. I'm so looking forward to that game in Atlanta on Halloween.

Florida better enjoy Faulkner for this year. Faulkner is the biggest reason for Florida’s hot start. He’s the real deal.

Not so fast. I'm not sold on Sumrall yet. In fact, I believe the Golesh/Durkin combo will be much better than what Florida has in the long run

Sumrall is solid. Time will tell but we can’t deny the quick turnaround. UF went from being depressed to hyped quickly

Cohen dropped the ball, yes. But Golesh isn't a terrible hire. He understands the assignment.

Yeah, I'm not building a statue to Sumrall yet, but he has made all the right decisions so far since the first day he was hired. That includes hiring coaches, player retention, handling the fanbase, and a lot more. There isn't enough luck in the world to fully explain how well he has done. But, to be fair we haven't seen how he handles adversity.

Golesh and Durkin should have gotten off to a faster start than Sumrall. Sumrall only brought a punter and a kicker. Golesh brought over a lot of his players to more quickly install his offense and culture. Durkin was retained to keep talent around and keep the defensive system they were used to. This should have given them a head start and it hasn't shown up yet. So, maybe they'll be better in the long run but currently that is very far from being apparent.

I agree. Did yall not watch the game last night? Sumrall's Gators kicked the $hite out of the #4 team in the country. Hanged FITTY on the #4 team in the country. While UT and UT were jerking each other and LSU thinking they back, Sumrall was curb stomping the #4 team in the country.

Nah. The Freeze players tried to extort Golesh and he told them to pound sand. Texas paid Cam 4M to not catch balls. I would rather be 3-1 with players who work for the coach, not the other way around.

Sumrall is going to kill it at Florida. Been saying it since the hire.
UF's while perception is based off beating OM. OM is off beat LSU. LSU is off A&M and preseason.
So it's too early to be deeming anyone good or a successful long term hire. There are plenty of HCs that looked good their first season and not later and even more teams that looked good til they played more teams and the quality ones became clear.

Nobody will ever know the true story. Rumor is Auburn wanted him to retain Durkin and he didn’t want to. It’s all rumor though.

Hard to believe the barn had opportunities to hire Kiffin and now Sumrall and whiffed both times — especially the Sumrall whiff because that was in the bag if they wanted it.

When Sumrall got the job and was interviewed, the interviewer asked him why he took the Florida job. He mentioned that he took the Florida job because they would let him leave Tulane the right way and coach them in the playoffs. He said it a bit angrily as well. So much so that I believe him.
So, it may be the Durkin thing, or Auburn wouldn't let him coach Tulane in the playoffs, or maybe he just preferred Florida for other reasons. As you say, it is unlikely that we will ever know the true story.
