Before 2002, Mizzou only played three or 4 games in STL since the Grand Avenue Ball Grounds/Sportsman's Park era.

I wish they would stop these neutral site games. College football should be played in campus stadiums. I get the bowl games, but LSU has to go to Houston and play Rice in the Texans stadium. I'll never understand that one.

Every year against Georgia. I guess the "home" team alternates.

Define "home" - 1 hr. from Gainesville or 4+ from Athens!

Auburn last played a regular season home game in Birmingham against someone other than Alabama in 1974 when they opened the season with Louisville.

Technically, Auburn's last home game at Legion Field was the 1991 Iron Bowl. IIRC, the last one before that was the 1978 Tennessee game.

Further proof that Mizzou does NOT belong in he SEC. They're only here for the money that is given to them. They're the trailer trash family that sneaked into the country club.

Miss state and ole miss used to play LSU in Jackson until they got embarrassed bc half the stadium was LSU fans lol. That's the truth.

It didn't have a damn thing to do with that. As I stated, Jackson was about double the size of both on campus stadiums and had lights. State got lights in 1986 and Ole Miss in 1990. They made way more money playing games in Jackson. Once lights were installed and the on campus stadiums expanded it was more profitable to play on campus. That's why State quit playing Jackson home games in 1991, and Ole Miss was down to one by 1992 and none by 1997. State also has an all-time winning record against LSU in Jackson and won 5 of the last 6 games there. Why would they quit playing a team at a place it was kicking their arse at? They didn't give a shite if half the crowd was LSU fans or not. It was all about $$$$$$$$. Also, the stadium in Jackson was becoming run down, and the state wasn't pumping any money in to renovate it, and State nor Ole Miss sure as hell weren't because they were expanding and improving their on campus stadiums. The neighborhood around it was becoming sketchy as hell by the late 80's/ early 90's also.

Sort of off topic, but look at the games Georgia Tech played while as SEC team. Barely (I think once at MSU) forced MSU and Ole Miss to come to Atlanta (barely played them anyway). GT did the same with Auburn, and people wonder why Georgia Tech has such a bad rep in the SEC among the old timers....

Georgia Tech never played Mississippi State as a member of the SEC. They refused to travel to Mississippi so MSU refused to play the 2nd rate Georgia school and played Georgia instead.

You are right....

No wonder when GT wanted back in everybody but Alabama said "no".

I think everybody's first thought here is that the reasoning would be on account of how violently racist and redneck Mississippi was back then and that it could've been a safety issue for the city slickers from Atlanta.

But I googled and found a quote from Bobby Dodd on this and I just became a HUGE fan of the guy

LINK
quote:

“Whatever is there to go to Mississippi for?” Dodd was quoted as saying. “We like to take our fans to exciting places and Mississippi isn’t one.”

he's right though. I really like the cut of Dodd's jib

quote:

so MSU refused to play the 2nd rate Georgia school and played Georgia instead

The article also mentions how State basically begged Dodd and Tech for a home and home and how Georgia also didn't play State 35 years bc they didn't want to go to your shite state and town either. So nice try with the spin

Uh you literally described Alabama in this era as well bud. MS didn't have a governor run as a presidential candidate on a segregationist platform.

Right because when I think of exciting places, I think of Auburn and Opelika Alabama!

And we didn't play either Georgia team as often because we'd rather play LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Tulane. And Florida later on for that matter.

State beat Tennessee 7-0 in 1950 in Starkvegas. It cost UT the National Championship. Whiny Neyland vowed never to bring a UT team back to Starkvegas. True to his word, State - UT played in MEM sporadically over the years but it was not until 1987 that UT played again at State.

As was mentioned , State/OM played a lot of games in Jackson but it was more than just the stadium. Travel to each campus was much more difficult in those years, neither town was very large, no hotels to speak of either.

However over the last 30 years both Oxford and Starkvegas have grown tremendously, each has four lane highways making travel easier and safer, both have a plethora of hotels and of course each stadium is very nice now and the atmosphere on campus is awesome.

Having said that, we had friends who lived in Jackson and they would set their travel trailers up at the stadium on Friday and stay until Sunday. We had a blast going to games in the 1970’s and 80’s all the way up until 1991.
Saw many DH’s at Memorial Stadium. Lot of great memories and had a lot of fun. But that era has passed and I am glad now that the games are all on campus. The stadium in Jackson is now way past it’s prime. They even moved the HS championship football games to the college campuses.

Actually Georgia use to play some of its home games at Georgia Tech’s stadium. I can’t find a list of all the games but ran across at least 4 in the late 1950’s era. (1955 - Ole Miss, 1957 - Texas, 1959 and 1961 - Miss State) I had read once that Georgia chose to play some of their games there as double headers to Georgia Tech games, hoping to increase attendance to their games. In the late 1950’s Georgia Tech had a larger fan base and Georgia struggled with attendance. Atlanta was also an easier travel destination.

It goes back to transportation and infrastructure in the post war south.

Much easier to bring the teams to play in big population centers than traveling to small college towns.

It was all about maximizing revenue.

Alabama played half and sometimes the majority of their home games in Birmingham for a long time.
