That’s interesting

Mizzou definitely played a few games in STL back in the day (albeit rarely) and only started playing in Kansas City in 2005.

But playing a large number of games in a nearby city is more of a southern team. Non majors like Cincinnati and Rutgers playing home games in the Bengals and Giants stadiums don’t count

I remember in the late 80's when I was in high school State played Auburn on the road three years in a row from 1987-89. This was because the SEC was going from 6 conference games to 7 and this was needed to even out the SEC schedule. I also remember playing Florida at home in both 85 and 86 to get our SEC schedule back even. Before this in even years we had 4 SEC home games and 2 on the road, and vice versa in odd years.

Auburn and Alabama played in Birmingham for most of their rivalry games. Alabama played Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt in Birmingham while I was in college.

Auburn & Ga played in Columbus Ga for a while. Columbus shite the bed on that whole deal but it was for the best for the 2 schools. College football has tremendously helped the economy of Auburn. I can’t imagine playing 2 potential home games on neutral sites.

We cannot wait for the 10 year contract of playing Arkansas at Hillbilly Jones Memorial Stadium in Arlington is over.

The game should be home and home.

To answer your question, the only time we play in Houston was for conference games with Rice and cougar high.

The main reason for some of the Auburn games being played outside of Auburn was teams refused or said they couldnt make it to Auburn.

Calling BS on this.

I’d wager Vanderbilt fans don’t even sniff the top 5 fans bases that live in the Nashville area

Auburn has never been hard to get to or at least not anymore than any other SEC schools. You played your games in Legion Field because you wanted the bigger stadium just like Alabama

The first home game Coach Bryant coached at Alabama was against LSU in Mobile.

That was the weirdest thing. LSU had 4 SEC home games and 2 on the road in odd years, and 2 at home and 4 on the road in even years.

In the '70s and '80s, Alabama almost always played its LSU home game in Birmingham. The '80 game was played in Tuscaloosa and then it was moved permanently to Tuscaloosa starting in '88.

LSU used to almost always play Ole Miss and Moo State in Jackson, but State moved it to Starkville starting in '93. What was weird is the LSU-MSU game was played in Baton Rouge every year from '64-70, and then in back-to-back years in '72 and '73. So that was nine out of 10 years the game was in Baton Rouge.

LSU-Ole Miss was in Oxford in '89 and then moved there permanently in '94.

Fact of the day: Mobile is about the same distance driving time to Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, Auburn and Tallahassee. In fact Mobile is closer to Baton Rouge than Tuscaloosa and Auburn

Florida was the only SEC school that would come to Auburn and play us in our own Stadium. They first started playing Auburn in Auburn in 1912-1927; and again in 1939, 1945 and from 1951 on . Don’t care to much for the Gators but give them props for traveling to Auburn.

Auburn played Tennessee 26 times before they ever came to Auburn in 1974.

It took 53 games until Alabama played Auburn in Auburn in 1989

It took 63 games before Georgia played Auburn in Auburn in 1960.

LSU played Auburn in Auburn in 1903 and 1908 but it took until 1970 to play in Auburn again. They only played 15 times between then.

Ole Miss didn’t play Auburn in Auburn until 1953. They had previously only played 5 games.

Miss st played Auburn in Auburn in 1910 and didn’t begin regularly playing them at home until 1949. They played each other 22 times before that.

Just a side note Auburn’s 1957 team only played 2 home games that season against Florida(HC)), and Kentucky. They only had 28 points scored on them that season and had 6 shut outs.

1957 was the first year Auburn played Kentucky at home but hey had only met 5 times previously.

Until about 1969 the SEC schedule was pretty screwed up and until 1972 the schedule was finally more aligned with some parody. As you can see some schools hardly ever played one another.

You realize you get to decide where the game is played if you are the home team right?

Also it is believed Alabama refused to travel to Auburn, citing poor roads and the small size of Hare Stadium. Alabama was joined in this sentiment by the Tennessee Volunteers (who refused to play in Auburn until 1974

n 1960, however, the Georgia Bulldogs ventured to Auburn to play the Tigers at home for the first time in the series. At the time, none of the Tigers’ other rivals had agreed to travel to Auburn.

There are other quotes out there as well and the ones above are not from an Auburn source

Again sorry you were unaware of this. Teams simply said they couldnt get to Auburn. Was is it a ploy to play in a more neutral site or actual travel issues is of contention

Bigger stadium means more money, more fans being able to attend, more and better accommodations for the fans. Hell, the closest real Alabama town is Montgomery and they're 70-80 miles away. Tuscaloosa had that problem until they did stadium added-ons a couple of times and Tuscaloosa grew.

Yes, because Legion Field was better than a three year old state of the art Busch Memorial Stadium.

Birmingham wishes they were a St. Louis.
