Freshman quarterback Justin Fields has told the Georgia coaching staff that he is looking into transferring after the conclusion of the 2018 season.
Fields asked to have his name included on the NCAA Transfer Portal list. The transfer portal took the place of the release student athletes needed to get from their coaches to speak with other schools.
Fields and his family are expected to consult with attorney Thomas Mars. Mars was instrumental in helping a number of Ole Miss student athletes appeal the NCAA rule that requires transfers between FBS schools to sit out one year. Those athletes, notable Shea Patterson of Michigan, were allowed to play immediately.

Which is funny because ESPN reported the exact opposite, that Fields was not yet in the transfer portal.

And if it’s true that he’s in the portal, it means he is visible to other programs and coaches to be recruited which means someone probably saw his name and leaked the story to Wolken.

I think he has to request for the school to enter him and the school has a short window to do it. Not sure he can do it himself

If he ends up at OU that's going to be some shite

He has to request it to allow him to talk with other programs (and vice versa) but may also request to be taken off if his current school lets him have his scholarship (current school can also pull his scholarship if it wants and is under no obligation to give it back once they do).

If he's able to get granted immediate eligibility over that racist slur that a FORMER student athlete said at a game, just one case like that, say hello to the floodgates opening on waivers being weak.

I guess my thought was that if he’s requested it then UGA coaches know. Right? I know that point has been debated

Coaches know, sure, but being in the portal doesn’t mean an intent to transfer just an intent to test the waters. Different players going to get different treatment from coaches in that regard; Fields is allowed to test waters risk free because of his ability whereas a kid lower on the depth chart won’t get the same luxury (scholarship would be pulled most likely)
ETA: if coaches were blindsided it was by the fact that someone in Fields camp leaked it (which doesn’t make sense given their response after the fact) or another staff did so in the basis of anonymity (which would make sense given the timing)
