Ole Miss apparently backed off because he was asking for an arse load of money and no buyout if he left for another job.

This is a solid comparison. It would give UGA some basketball credibility and give the appearance of a change in the way university views basketball.

Not knowing who Thad Matta is in an indictment of you, not Thad Matta.

Smart move on Ole Miss' part.

I really like Matta as a coach and there's no question about his determination to fight through pain and adversity from botched back surgery 11-years-ago----but if reports are correct, other than giving it a rest, Matta's chronic back-hip-leg
problems will never improve, only deteriorate.
When he left Ohio State, he was wearing a leg brace and could not take his shoes off.
After a year of R&R , I'm sure he feels ready to
jump back in and perhaps he can avoid the shape he was in when he left OSU by reining in some of his
intensity. Georgia would be rolling the dice with Matta and his health. Regardless, I wish Thad Matta well. A great coach who seemed to do it right.

Yeah, we stopped recruiting Player X because coaches heard he has character issues and probably would not be able to qualify anyways.

Thad is better than UGA basketball deserves.

This is better than a best case scenario.

Even if the health doesn't improve, he has a better incoming resume' than any UGA ball coach.

How many coaches in the country have a .740 win percentage for their careers? If anything, even a failed experiment will teach us what a winning program should do on a daily basis.

Not even close to the same thing.

Ole Miss is basically saying "We don't care enough about basketball to spend this kind of money on it + we, Ole Miss, acknowledge we aren't a good enough program to retain him"

They are admitting they are too poor to be in a bidding war, not that they don't want him

Yea, what is the worst case scenario, he comes in and has 2 teams that go 19-13, signs a few decent recruiting classes then has to retire because of the pain stuff?

I mean, if that is the WORST CASE scenario with a guy and the best case is the rest of the his career.........seems like a no-brainer to me.

Yall keep saying "he's sick" like he's got cancer or late stage renal failure or something. He has a bad back.

It's a lot more than a bad back. He has drop foot from a procedure gone bad and lives with a lot of pain.

That said, I hope he can get back into coaching if that's what he wants. Thad has always been a class act and I wish him nothing but the best. He'd be a great addition to Georgia athletics.

Def better than Fox but Matta'ss recruiting fell off towards the ending.

The bigger deal would be making UGA relevant in basketball just on Matta's name brand + inevitable TV love fest/interest.

This can't be understated. Even in the case that his health deteriorates, UGA needs someone to show the program how to win. He would be a great help in that effort.
