Trying to recruit at OSU is much easier than recruiting at UGA. He better have his shet wired tight.

Meh. OSU obviously, without question, has an easier sell on facilities/history/tradition/etc. But there are boatloads of talent in GA especially in Atlanta..I realize Ohio has some good HS talent but it's nothing like georgia. It's also "easier" because expecations are so much lower. Nab a single 5* and our fanbase is through the roof, whereas at OSU it may just be old hat.

Not really. I assume he’s some shooty hoops “coach” as Georgia is looking for one. I only follow real sports.

UGA has a BB history and it isn't the history their fans speak about. Then again they're elite in football with than one NC since JFK was banging Marilyn Monroe.

The major instate school for the ATL metro area will always be an advantageous recruiting job. ATL basketball is developing into one of the best recruiting grounds in the country

Yep - look at the recent list of Top 100 kids from Metro Atlanta who have signed out of state at non-blue blood type programs. You are always gonna lose kids to UCLA, Duke and Kentucky, but you should at least split with Alabama, Auburn and FSU.

2015 - Jaylen Brown, Cal (5-star, #4 Overall)
2015 - Malik Beasley, FSU (4-star, #39 Overall)
2015 - Daniel Giddens, OSU/Bama (4-star, #51 Overall)
2015 - Noah Dickerson, Washington (4-star, #73 Overall)
2015 - Doral Moore, Wake Forest (4-star, #87 Overall)
2016 - Alterique Gilbert, UConn (4-star, #32 Overall)
2016 - Romello White, Arizona St (4-star, #76 Overall)
2016 - Jared Harper, Auburn (4-star, #90 Overall)
2017 - Collin Sexton, Alabama (5-star, #5 Overall)
2017 - MJ Walker, FSU (4-star, #28 Overall)
2017 - Chuma Okeke, Auburn (4-star, #47 Overall)
2017 - Davion Mitchell, Auburn (4-star, #59 Overall)
2017 - Ike Obiagu, FSU (4-star, #63 Overall)
2018 - Landers Nolley, Virginia Tech (4-star, #59 Overall)

That doesn't include kids who signed with Arizona, Duke, North Carolina, Louisville or Kentucky.

All of those kids were Top 100 players from Metro Atlanta (not even the rest of the state, just metro ATL) in the last 4 years who signed at non-basketball powers not named UGA. Nobody is going to "lock down the state" like Kirby did in football for numerous reasons (basketball isn't like football, UGA basketball ain't UGA football, etc), but a good recruiter who plays the AAU game should be able to sign consistent Top 15 classes there with the occasional Top 5-10.

Alabama fans are so smug and insecure. The irony is so thick you can cut it with a knife. Perhaps it is the fact that there is nothing worth spitting on in the state of Alabama outside of Crimson Tide football, and even that is dirty as hell.

Exactly. And I mean we aren't starting from ground zero here either, we are typically an NIT level team with the mediocre talent we have. Imagine having 2-3 of the guys you mentioned on the roster and we're essentially a tourney team more often than we aren't.

Plus we'll actually run an offense! I'm giddy.

Yea, that's the thing, nobody is arguing Georgia has to start beating out Duke for kids like Montgomery and Carter.

Holding serve against Auburn and FSU and splitting the guys I labeled above and you have a Top 25 class.

And that doesn't even mention some of the lower rated kids who have gone on to be great players at other schools (Malcolm Brogdon, Jaron Blossomgame, etc).

Sometimes great coaches get too content and by the time they realize something is wrong it is too late to fix it. See Urban Meyer at Florida. This is a no brainer for UGA if you are convinced that his "fire" is back and that he has learned from prior mistakes. Worst case scenario he is still lazy and your program is still average. Best case he returns to prior form and you have a top 10 level coach who will actually stay at UGA since he is damaged goods. The retreads hired by SEC schools (Barnes, Howland, Johnson) have been doing a lot better than the mid majors we used to promote up.

Maybe in football but not true at all in basketball. The big knock on Thad in the past few years is that he let the 5* talent leave the state.

I don't think Matta is considered damaged goods in terms of coaching ability.

IMO, it all comes back to the question I asked earlier and got downvoted for - is his health problem resolved to the point that he can get out, work to sell the program, and recruit to the level needed to succeed at UGA.

He's only been off a year. If I were a UGA fan, my concern would be that he's feeling better because of the time off but the problems will recur once he gets back in the grind.

Having said that, I don't see a downside to the hire from a UGA standpoint. Final four aside, they don't have a good basketball history. IIRC, they are under .500 all time in SEC play so a guy like Matta can be a home run hire that brings a complete culture change. If the health problems return and he has to bow out again, they're no worse off than they are right now.

Walking slower than usual isn't really a "sickness" IMO.

That was not what he has/had. A bad back is one thing that a lot of old people had. He had a surgery gone really bad, and he had to have a special seat taken with him to games, that was higher than the others. I think his foot is partially/completely numb.

The amount of talent nearby UGA's campus and how much they let it get away is very sad. It's not like it's a situation where there's only 1 or 2 Top 100 type kids each year nearby and if they get away to a blue blood "Well, we tried", it's a handful every year, meanwhile, UGA might get 1 of them then signs 2, 3 or 4 lowly rated kids.

They should be able to sign 2-3 Top 100 kids a year.
