Went to high school with Thad (from Hoopston, IL)...dad was the Principal/AD...good hire, let’s see hi back hold up.

But Matta was actually sick.
I wouldn't call it sick. He had a really bad back issue that really made it hard to walk and stand. I would assume if he is seeking out jobs, he has had some sort of surgery and is in better shape. Prior to his back issues, Matta was always in great shape and worked out with his team and on his own.

Yall keep saying "he's sick" like he's got cancer or late stage renal failure or something. He has a bad back. Walking slower than usual isn't really a "sickness" IMO.
Eh, a bad back has ruined more than a few folks from their jobs. It's a pretty debilitating injury for a job that requires a lot of effort and physical standing/movement. However, if there's a permanent treatment/fix/adjustment for the pain then it becomes a moot issue.
I think Georgia basically is getting a guy, due to random issues, that they normally would not be able to get. Home run IMHO.

His recruiting went down a bit his last years at State. I think he will do well at UGA if he takes the job.

Was his health the reason it didn't work out for him at Ohio State? I wondered why the program took a downturn after he had built it up and I thought maybe he just got lucky on one recruiting class.

Bad move imo
How?
The guy is 50 years old and if his back has been worked on and healed, he has at least 10-15 more years of coaching left in him.
He has been to multiple Final Fours, won 8 conference championships, won 7 conference tourney championships, 5 time conference coach of the year honors, 13 NCAA Tourneys, 4 Elite Eights, and 6 Sweet Sixteens.

Great move, other than his health. As far as I know though, that isn’t as much of an issue anymore

Thad Matta on a recruiting visit 2019. According to tRant.

Another thing people are overlooking is how gargantuan this would be a for a basketball program like ours. It'd be like if Richt went to Virginia instead of Miami.
In 12 posteason eligible seasons at OSU, TM went to 9 NCAATs and 2 NITs (winning one). 5 sweet 16s, 3 elite 8s, 2 final 4s, and 1 national runner up. That is obscenely good resume for someone giving UGA serious interest. Even even if he doesn't even accomplish half of what he did at OSU our fans would still be through the roof. I mean at this point msot of our fans would kill to even MAKE the tourney, much less even win one game in it!

What was wrong with his health?

Yes. They would have to bring a chair out for him during practices so that he could coach from the seated position.

Matta had more than one good year. He had 3 seasons of 30 or more wins, 7 seasons of 25 or more wins, 5 Big Ten Championships, 3 Big Ten Tourney titles, NCAA Runner Up, 2 Final Fours, etc. He was much more than a one recruiting class guy. He is a damn good coach and has a resume that would be a shoe in for a blue blood program, IMO

Would be a good hire for UGA

If he’s healthy, hope we opened up the checkbook and finally got serious.

Does he just have a bad back?

would be a great hire IMO

quote:Perhaps. It's undeniable that his last two teams were his worst at Ohio State and he wasn't getting the level of elite talent that he had been getting prior. Ohio State was on a downhill slope and Holtmann breathed some youth into it.
If his health is good, would you still think it was a bad move? If so, why?
Just curious.
Is that directly correlated to his health? Probably. But I kinda think he's damaged goods.

Urban Meyers health improved, I guess Thadd's can too.

We need to take Thad to the guy that fused Tiger’s back.

This happens to a lot of coaches after a long tenure at one place.
