Motta was a good HC in his younger years. IF he can recruit and recapture his vigor, he could be a great fit at UGA. But SECMBB has been on the rise and a mediocre recruiting effort wont cut it in today's SEC.

UGA finally about to get serious about hoops and will have the 2nd highest paid coach in the SEC.
Rest of SEC sans UK is fricked.

If Matta can successfully recruit the Atlanta area and stay healthy Georgia is going to be really good

Yea, what is the worst case scenario, he comes in and has 2 teams that go 19-13, signs a few decent recruiting classes then has to retire because of the pain stuff?
I mean, if that is the WORST CASE scenario with a guy and the best case is the rest of the his career.........seems like a no-brainer to me.
This is pretty much my thought... all the "risk" in this are essentially just kicking the can down the road 2 years or so... which is more or less what we did with Fox since 2014... we're used to that. The upside to this is so ridiculously high, that our AD would have to be brain dead not to make the hire if he's interested. If the ~3.x mill number is correct as well, that seems more than fair relative to what the rest of the league is paying and the quality of coach we're bringing in. The basketball program netted $3M in profits in 2016-2017 (haven't seen figures for this year yet but would imagine similar if not slightly better), so you've got room in the budget to bump the pay up from the 2.15M or so we were paying Fox without getting out of the black - and that's before accounting for increased/renewed interest in the basketball program that typically accompanies a solid hire...
Me whenever the official official announcement gets made (since apparently insiders are saying it's unofficially officially a done deal... )...

Freaking love his attitude in the remarks from this column: LINK /
Also, thought it was interesting to note that his *worst* team in 13 years is more or less equivalent to what we got out of Fox *on average*.

However, Matta said other coaches have used his health against him on the recruiting front in the past eight seasons.
“Somebody told a recruit I was dying,” Matta said. “Swear to God. Not that my foot doesn’t lift, but I was going to die. Tough business I’m in.”
He added that the recruit’s father then called him saying that the recruit was going to delay the announcement of his commitment because of health issues. When Matta asked the father what was wrong, he told Matta it was not the recruit’s health, it was Matta’s.
“He said, ‘Well it’s your health. You’re going to die.’ I said, ‘I’ve never missed a day of work, I’ve never missed a day of recruiting, I’ve never missed a game,” Matta said.

OSU is currently in one of its worst seasons, record-wise, since Matta began coaching OSU 13 years ago. The Buckeyes are 17-14, 7-11 in the Big Ten, and playing on the first day of the Big Ten tournament as one of the bottom four teams in the conference.
With the team likely to miss the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year for the first time since Matta took the job, the criticism of the coach and the direction of the program is warranted, but Matta affirmed that his health isn’t any reason to step down from the job at this point.
“Somebody asked me today if I wanted to put out a statement, I said, ‘I could care less. You don’t need to do that,’” he said.

Good move. What does UGA really have to lose?

Good luck....I like seeing good coaches in the SEC...a lot of asshats on this board hope or try to predict who fails in the NCAA...they haven't a clue how much every win helps the conference.
Those asshats will be the first to cry if their team is on the bubble and left out because only six SEC teams made it. We need to be drawing eight or even nine teams every damn year.
I will pull for every SEC team unless they play UF.

Yeah... it's funny... Football has become a bit of a zero sum game in that regard... a loss for rivals is a win for you - whether that's recruiting or on the field...
Because of the volume of teams that make the tournament, conference perception means a *shitload* more come tournament selection time... If football were to expand beyond 4 teams, I imagine you'd see a bit more of this in football as well, but still probably not as much as basketball...

but not true at all in basketball
The last time Ohio had more ESPN top 100 recruits was the 2013 class, which is the only time in the past decade. Most years GA has significantly more top 100 players as well
You're delusional if you think OH has better basketball talent than GA
Not to mention that OSU has Xavier, Cincy and Dayton all in state to compete with. Two of those programs reside in Cincy which is part of OH's most fertile bball recruiting

If he gets Mark Fox results at twice the cost, then that'll be a problem. UGA wouldn't fire him.

He would be likely the best they could do.

Fox made a little north of $2M this season. Matta will (presumably) start of a little north of $3M. Not nearly "twice the cost", and you are guanrateed to see higher returns in season ticket and gate sales generated.
Also IMO it would honestly be hard for Matta to only get Fox results. I mean they are worlds apart in just about every way; personality, recruiting, coaching philosophies, etc.

outside of a few hot boards kermit has never even been mentioned. As of about 3 or 4 days ago it's been 100% thad and most people suspect it's already a done deal essentially.
