I'm quite sure that there have been plenty of other referral situations over the years.

Lou Holtz famously told Bobby Bowden that Randy Moss was, at heart, "a really good person" when it became apparent Moss couldn't enroll at Notre Dame. He also told Bowden that he was impressed with the respect that Moss paid his mother.

These types of things used to happen among coaches all the time because they placed the welfare of players above everything else. Given the hyper-competitive nature of college athletics compared with the warped financial incentives, I'm not so sure these types of exchanges would happen today.

I'm sure there used to be, but with the portal, NIL, and the "student" part of student-athlete being an absolute joke, I doubt you see it in conference anymore.

Maybe Smart calling either of the GSUs, Valdosta, or the like, but I don't see a coach say at Florida, calling Kentucky and referring a player.

Mark Richt once called up Sylvester Croom and asked him to consider taking Jamar Chaney after an SAT testing score issue became a sticking point at Georgia.

Richt also picked up the phone and lobbied the Arkansas staff to take Michael Grant in 2004 because he couldn't get admitted to UGA as a result of being expelled from South Gwinnett HS in his sophomore year.

Pittman is a good man. He was a hell of an oline coach. He left much to be desired over his HC years, but dont hate him for it. Sam is Sam. What you see is what you get.

Arkansas could have hired Terry Don Phillips after Broyles retired in 2007/2008.

He was the AD at Clemson that hired Dabo.

He was a very good offensive line recruiter during the Bert years.

But his offensive line hires were terrible as head coach.

Maybe Bert was the key to get the right offensive linemen. He is doing well at Illinois.

I go to church with Sam's brother, and he is a really nice guy. He told me about his family and how he and Sam grew up. They seem like really good people.

I was pulling for him to have success at Arkansas. He seems like a genuinely good dude.

Are you kidding? In his second year Pittman beat LSU, Texas, aTm and Missouri all in the same season. Name another Arkansas coach who beat all of the historic rivalries in the same season?

Going 2-10 is historically terrible. With 4 out of conference games, no SEC schools should go 2-10. Despite him having one decent season in 2021, Pittman was pretty bad at Arkansas.

It was a bad hire that looked good after 2021 and then Sexton fricked Arkansas by leveraging a massive contract that was undeserved. That’s really it. Pittman never should’ve gotten to return in 2025. No program needs to go 2-10. It’s a historical shite stain.
