Gainesville is a great university town and college student environment! It would be insane not to take advantage of a free education from a top notch university. Admission to UF has become much more difficult over the years and there will be guarunteed success if your son does his part, regardless of the field of study he chooses.

Task Force 1050

It’s an NSA base with enough naval personnel to warrant an Navy exchange(planning stage with a full navy support center). They have a sub shop, linguist/analysts shop, Naval medical facilities, a detachment of marines etc. same for the airforce. And a full slate of international exchange folks. The war on “terror” has blurred the lines of joint operations that schools are now MOS based instead of branch based and the commo/cyber security school at Gordon takes everybody. Gate one has both shore patrol and military police checking IDs on any given day. I use to shoot with a couple Navy Pistol team guys.

There is a mall near the stadium

Kentucky’s grocery store stadium is actually a little closer to a mall than Ben Hill Griffin is.

I believe they are very close if not so already. Almost every major is well respected.

Not quite yet, #6 right now. Part of the reason they are putting $2B into the campus.

Not a gator fan but have been to Gainesville many times since i now live in jax. Typical college town but if your son has a chance for a free education to one of the best public universities in the country you don't say no to that.

Gainesville is boring and one of the worst GameDay experiences.

Maybe you have had a bad experience, but Gainesville is a great college town and an absolute blast as a student. Easily one of the best (if not the best) combos of academics, athletics and college experience.

take the offer. UF degree is worth 10x more than all the other schools besides Vandy.

Texas A&M graduates get higher starting salaries than any other SEC school, including Vandy.

and down I-75 about 20 miles is (or was) Cafe Risque (we bare all) where coeds earn extra.

Lived in Gainesville a couple of years. Their burger isn't bad at 3 am while drunk. But, it's also the only place where I've seen a stripper with a tattoo of a half opened switchblade inside of a spider web, on her pussy.

If you like meth and anal sex Jacksonville is the place to be according to some Navy guys now stationed at Ft Gordon.

Tennessee has been taking it in the arse from Florida for quite awhile. Maybe that's what you're thinking.

I see... that is interesting and appreciated information. I went through basic and AIT training at Gordon in 1965... guess my info is just a bit dated... thanks.,

Pretty sure UF is a very good school academically. Put aside football rivalries for that.

Congrat’s on your son doing so well in high school. Florida is an awesome all around school to attend and has a great social scene. Get him a scooter.

Gainesville has gotten a lot better. Lots of new bars and breweries. They've built up the downtown area and the college bar area right near the stadium.

It completely sucked shite 15-20 years ago.

Florida is basically behind only Michigan, Cal-Berkely, UCLA, UVA, and UNC in academic standing among public universities. If your son is planning on living and working in the South, the job connections alone of a UF degree should outweigh almost any other factor.

Every Southern college town will have dive bars and cheap pizza and young, attractive women. If he wants a high profile sports experience, UF fields more competitive teams in all sports than any other school in the conference.

However, it's most important that he (1) finish and (2) do well. If he's gonna get homesick for crawfish and pralines, then I'd explore the most financially rewarding, well respected school nearby.

I have never been to Gainesville, but as an Aggie I know the University of Florida is very respected academically.

Congratulations to you son and I wish him the best of luck in his endeavors. We need more kids like him.

Cheers!

I recommend visiting the free museum right near the campus exit on 1-75...great displays of animal artifacts, such mastodon skeletal remains, found in Florida years ago, a huge animal...then you have a section where every known bird that has been seen in the state has their eggs preserved. A lot of animals that have had taxidermy preservation along with lots of Gator remains, a seminole indian village that is so authentic and a swamp with under ground electrical circuits to make small creatures move around. Sharks, whales and other sea creatures are on display. Everything is free unless you want to visit the botanical gardens and see huge swarms of butterflies.
A gift shop where I dare you to visit without buying something, There is covered parking closeby.

Academics are one of the best, UF, UGA and Vandy lead the way. Shands Hospital is close to school and very respected.

Kids will have a good time at any SEC school. No matter what the town is like, most kids do most everything on campus. I have a good friend who graduated from Tennessee and he knew very little about Knoxville even after graduating. With 20K+ students on every campus, there is plenty to do.

Yep. Big public school in the South that puts a high value on sports. He'll be just fine.
