I think it’s mostly about market size and brand value. Market size is probably where the search starts(potential viewership) and brand loyalty is how they trim the list(how much of said market can you deliver).

Sounds like wishful thinking.

I mean, they sued the ACC in an effort to get out of the conference last year. Hard for me to imagine that they would take that extreme measure if they weren’t pretty damn confident that they had a better landing spot (B1G or SEC being the only clearly better options than the current ACC).

FSU definitely has a landing spot as do others. Once the buyout drops to a manageable level the next round begins and it will coincide with the playoffs expanding. It’s gonna be great for the sport and bring in more fans.

But I do completely understand the hatred of this from fans of teams who use to be the darlings and get invites every year by winning a lot of games against a bunch of nobody SEC teams. Those days are over. Don’t worry though, your team will still get in when the SEC and BIG get 8 a piece in a 24 team playoff. The problem is now you’ll have to win multiple games against high level competition instead of just 1 or 2. Queue the - we beat each other up mantra. The sport has moved past that.

Bobby Bowden $crewed FSU when he had a chance to get in the SEC and blew it. FSU is going to continue to pay for that bad decision for years.

Spot on and it hasn't ended. The culture is one of quitting. Look at what happened to their best team in years when they were snubbed by the playoff. The culture of taking the path of least resistance is still alive and well in Tallahassee....

eh, nobody could imagine the money involved in college sports 35 years ago. Not to mention, the SEC wasn't then what it is now (or was a few years ago), the ACC had won 2 football championships since the last won by an SEC school and 3 basketball championships since the last won by an SEC school, while having the defending national champion in each sport. That said, culturally, it just never made any sense to bypass the SEC for the ACC.

They do until they can afford to pay the exit fee. Sounds like FSU's AD thinks they can afford it in about 24 months.

That was more because they got Clemson's support.

All the progress you talk about in this thread came from Clemson, the effort from FSU has been basically incompetent in comparison. Clemson's lawyers are the ones who found out about the ESPN option in 2027 that kinda opened it all up.

So its going to be Clemson who pulls the trigger, and they likely will wait until its a smaller risk.

FSU doesn't have the leverage to take on the ACC by itself.

Why don't y'all try to expand rather than giving up on the ACC? Georgia Tech already had a shot at the SEC.

The ACC is a dead conference because of poor leadership out of Charlotte. In the past, sure schools would try and save it like they did when they added VT, Pitt, Louisville, and Miami. But this is a new time and the money difference will force teams to leave at the first chance they have after the GOR albatross becomes less. I do imagine some sort of ACC will grab other teams form Conference USA and the Sunbelt once they lose 7-8 teams in a couple of years.

As for GT, we’ll have an invite to the BIG like we had in the past. This time we won’t be stupid enough to believe the clowns in Charlotte. The only question is will the SEC want to keep the BIG out of Atlanta.

I think if it hits the fan, the SEC will build a wall from Richmond to Dallas and take FSU, Clemson, UNC, and VT. No one else really matters.

Sure, GT, UVA and Duke may go to the B1G, but it won’t matter. It would be like them adding Rutgers and Maryland.

I think the B1G will eventually fail because they forgot that college athletics, especially football, is regional. Our border state rivalries, and regional games are much more important than UCLA vs Maryland, Nebraska vs Rutgers, etc. Even games in within the Midwest or the old Pac10 footprint are boring and no one cares.

How much longer should FSU regret? I think FSU is saving up to buy a move to leave ACC for the SEC. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Big 10 got them.

Bubbles, your thoughts are from the old days. College football absolutely built its life and success in regional games. That is absolutely true. But it’s also true that the world has shrunk. Back in those days Auburn-Ole Miss game was attended because it probably wasn’t the game of the week which meant no TV. Now, I can be in Tokyo (I’ve done this many times while working) and have watched my lowly GT play Wake or Duke from my hotel room on the other side of the earth.

Also, have you not noticed that a lot of big games are now played at neutral sites all over the country and they are SOLD OUT.

The BIG is setting itself up to dominate the sport nationally so while it’s easy to laugh at a Wisconsin vs. UCLA game you miss the big picture. The BIG is bringing in new fans while the SEC is holding on to the past and praying that grandkids will still care about these fun little southern rivalries. But the numbers show that young people don’t care nearly as much. Sure, recently successful teams like Bama and UGA still have the old vibe but 15 year olds aren’t clamoring for A&M, Texas, Miss St, and in and on. The SEC has to bring in new fans and you don’t do that staying in your own bubble. But I hope they do and I hope my team ends up in the BIG.

That is one thing we agree on.

You sound a lot like the FSU AD,….”SEC is in the past,……we want to be relevant nationally,…”

But,….if your teams sniffed any interest from the SEC either FSU or GT would crawl across broken glass to get in the premier conference in college football.

Neutral site games have been overwhelmingly low attendance.
