I've said it before and I'll say it again. There is one, and only one, football team that matters.

There is some realpolitik for you.

So Bama received $5.5million and paid back 4.4 million. So the university of Alabama'a Athletic Department is on welfare. Time to shutdown your athletics gumps.

Cute attempt. UA's football program draws in over $140 mil a year in revenue and banks about $30 mil in profit annually. Charging students a $100 athletic fee may be greedy, but it isn't the same as having your athletic department supported by taxpayers.

I'm sure UAB football hits it ceiling at 30k fans. Its not there to be a money maker. All companies have programs for it's employees that lose money.

them and the Awbs claiming that it's UA is scared of UAB and that this is just a way to protect the University.

Yep, and that claim is seriously one of the most intellectually dishonest things one can possibly ever hear.

UAB has a large enough endowment to sustain a football program.

Actually, (ignoring for the moment that you don't know what an endowment is for), UAB's is quite small for a university it's size. Part of the plan for the capital campaign was to use a significant portion of the money to increase the endowment.

The lack of fan support comes from playing in a rusting POS stadium that is not on campus

So you're saying that UAB travels well?

"It's really shameful. Especially with all that UAB provides the state"

UAB hijacked the UAT's medical school. Taking away a floundering football program that even few UAB "fans" care about is small potatoes compared to that.

Here are the programs I would relegate to FCS right now (UAB is not one of them)

-Idaho
-Hawai'i
-USMA
-UMass
-New Mexico State

These programs have shown a remarkable ability to have sustained incompetence over a period of several years without the revenue or fan support to overcome it.

Nobody's taking it away. Their own president is shutting it down based on the recommendation of a consulting group he hired.

UAB is just one of many smaller programs that will be relegated downward or eliminated now that the power 5 schools have taken over control of the postseason. imho

Why in the world would the trustees go all in on a $75 million dollar stadium? On the premise that once UAB had a stadium, then more people would follow the program? So just bet $75 million in University funds that this will happen? Has anyone here ever been in business and taken a risk with that kind of money? UAB has never had a decent fan base, and certainly not one that would sustain even a Jax State-size stadium.

How much money do you think UAB brings in annually?

They're the cash cow of the UA system, second largest employer in Alabama (if you consider the federal govt an employer) and made $3.1 billion in revenue in 2013. UAB isn't just some moocher. UA system and UAT benefits from them too.
