For the last 6 months it’s been “They are kids, they will be fine” - now it’s “Oh well it isn’t because of football. ”

When you’re actively searching for reasons to downplay a kids death because you’re worried about a game - you’ve probably lost touch with reality.

I've never thought a person 1 inch taller than me and almost 200 pounds heavier was anything close to healthy. That's disgustingly obese. Let me know when college swimmers start dropping, then I'll be concerned.

That isn't the point. "college athletes are in too good of physical shape for covid to cause major problems" has been the narrative.

The point is the point was "generally speaking."

There will be deaths from COVID just like there will be from the flu and automobile accidents, but neither of the latter has led to societal handicapping like we have seen with COVID.

The one thing that sucks worse than your mother passing away is you using her death to make a political point.

May she rest in peace!

As long as you realize the original source retracted their statements that the kid had Covid.

Probably would have been in better shape to deal with the virus if he had been allowed to be participating in football activities for the last six months. Terrible for the young man and his family but anyone trying to use this as some sort of gotcha for football is a clown.

That is just the first few responses. I keep seeing people saying "this is just a flu". This shite needs to be taken more seriously. I am convinced that if a first rounder dies from it the goalpost will be moved again in some way.

I knew the sports community wouldn't give a shite and would move the goal posts when Pat Dye passed. All I saw were "oh well he's old" or "well he had kidney issues."

Did people try and use Dye's death as a reason football shouldnt be played?

No, but they sure set the precedent of how a death would be treated.

Are bloodclots related to or caused by covid (if that is indeed the cause of death)? I ask honestly because I have no clue.

Article - What is known about COVID-19 and abnormal blood clotting

A theory that is out there regarding the mechanism for COVID-19 blood clotting from a Professor in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Cornell (Weill Cornell School of Medicine).

quote:

In our initial analyses of lung and other clot-filled tissue from COVID-19 cases, we found that the clots in small blood vessels are accompanied by the deposition of immune molecules called complement proteins. When activated in what is called the complement cascade, complement proteins can powerfully mobilize other elements of the immune system, leading to a hyper-inflamed state. They also can injure or kill infected cells and can promote the formation of blood clots while inhibiting natural clot-preventing factors in the blood. We found evidence that the spike proteins that stud the outside of the COVID-19 coronavirus bind to one of these complement proteins, known as MASP2, and this may be one mechanism by which it can directly initiate the complement cascade. In other words, the virus itself may be directly setting off an immune cascade that results in clotting.

What? He didn't die of Covid and it was a miracle he lives as long as he did.

So exactly how did you think it should be treated instead?

It's an odd disease, and you really can't tell who it will just make mildly ill, vs the small percentage it will kill. Co-morbidities do play a role, but NOT always. I'm pretty certain the 26 yr old Indian swimmer was in great condition.

I just don't think we need to end civilization as we know it, due to the virus. If anything, all the more reason to live your life to the fullest, and if that involves sports, then let it go on.

College student that died of COVID that happened to be a football player.

He also happened to be 6-3 and 355 when at his playing weight. What do you think he weighed since he wasn't working out?

His 355 (or maybe even 380+) pounds may have had as much to do with his death as anything. But the media won't talk about that.

Here is the thing that makes it difficult to capture statistically...healthy people occasionally die too. Co-morbidity does play a role, but it also probably played a role in H1N1 (around 85% of H1N1 deaths from the last Pandemic had co-morbidity documentation). How much did the co-morbidity contribute? There isn't any way to know.

The answer is yes. COVID infection can lead to or cause blood clots. The insidious thing about the virus is that it can cause so many different problems in different people.

He died WITH covid and we don't know whether contracting it accelerated his demise like it does among people who have been living with other ailments.
