Correct

quote:

How the hell is it a humble brag if they went there?

Because Emory has become a hellhole of rich entitled coastal elites and international students who go there because it costs a lot and then they can brag about it. They're obnoxious as frick. frick Emory.

This isn't me being sarcastic. A member of my immediate family worked there for ~30 years and was a senior PA at Winship. I'm very familiar with Emory. They fricking suck, both the Medical and School sides of their house. I've seen them go from this really good school that served as a center for learning and medical care for Atlanta, Georgia, and the Southeast to whatever the heck they are now.

New Orleans:

If you went to a Catholic league school you are an LSU fan

If you went to Newman/Country Day you act like you went to college at Harvard but you went to Bama or Ole Miss (see CajunBama)

If you went to public school you are in prison

So I would say

70% LSU
15% bAMA
5% Ole Miss
10% other

I've lived ITP for a decade and there are people with Emory stuff every where.

I don't know what it is like OTP, but it's not even close ITP.

And yes, it's all international/NE prep school kids. The parking lot at North Decatur Willy's is basically the Jersey Turnpike.

This is so true.

I live in Birmingham, and driving around its obvious Bama has a huge advantage. But in my office, Auburn probably has a 2:1 advantage. The closer you are to the OTM area, its 50/50. As you move away from the heart of town, Bama's advantage grows rapidly.

I see more UGA stuff on cars and house flags than any other school by a lot

the UAB stuff has picked up a bunch recently; but still seem to see more UGA representation

I would say this is a huge over-estimation for UAB... while they seem to be getting a bit more of a following lately, they don't make up even close to 7% of the city.

Think of it this way, for every 3.5 Auburn fans, do you see a UAB fan? No.

For every 5.5 Bama fans, do you see a UAB fan? No.

Birmingham is dominated by Bama and Auburn is a dominant 2nd. Everyone else has a very small representation.

the UAB representation has gone way up since the "resurrection"

plus, the amazing season they just had

but, it is fair to say that a good number of "UAB people" are Bama or Aub 1st, but still kind of like the Blazers

My estimation of Birmingham... at least for the segment that have an interest in college sports:

60%- Alabama
30%- Auburn
10%- All Others*

*If you take this 10% and break it out by team, it would look something like this:

1.5%- UAB
0.8%- Georgia
0.8%- Tennessee
0.7%- Mississippi St.
0.5%- Ole Miss
0.4%- Florida St.
0.3%- Clemson
5.0%- ALL OTHERS

Bentonville

60% Arkansas

40% all other schools literally all over the nation

If you were to own a sports bar here, it would be smart to have pennants of every D1 and 1-AA team in America all over the walls

OP seemed to imply loyalty was based on sports not general status or other. Folks wearing Harvard or Emory gear are generally non sports where Notre Dame and Stanford can claim gear as sports related.

quote:

How the hell is it a humble brag if they went there?

OP used the word loyalty which implies the wearer is loyal to the institution. Some schools it is more about snobbery and brand than loyalty. My relative who went to Emory is plenty smart but they never let you forget it and are downright snobbish about it. It is like getting in an argument with Tillman about Clemson being better than Harvard except the IQ at Emory is better even if it is not elite.

Emory grads were their gear to advertise how smart they are even tho many lack charm, class, or common intelligence (like cooking or changing a tire). I know this is a bit of an over simplification but seems to be a trend. They also have their share of sidewalk fans who wear the gear to look hip or cool.

Columbus is an Auburn town far and away, followed closely by UGA and Alabama, which seem surprisingly closely represented. I guess I expected more of an in-state loyalty than the proximity loyalty we see here. Ones and twos of everyone else from the area.

I was really expecting to see more FSU fans than I do. It's probably 3 hours or less away.

I think during the Shula era, at the voting during some election, there was an exit poll. One of the questions was of which college football program were they a fan. This was not for college football fans but all voters. Below is the result.

Bama 48%
AU 20
UAB 6 or 8.

This is typical for the scientific polls that I've seen. Usually, contrary to the local media's assertion and the assumption of many others, Bama is between 2-2.5 times greater than AU throughout the state as a whole. Bham is even more of a Bama town.

At one time AU began getting a good % of the Over the Mountain contingent, i.e., the well off. This was because of Bama's arrogance and laziness. But ~15 years ago Dr. Witt changed everything and began rectifying many problems, including that one.

On another note altogether. There was a scientific poll by the Mobile Press Register at the end of the 2006 season asking Bama fans if Shula should be fired. Contrary to the popular view that the Bama fanbase is so demanding, 89% said he should get more time because of the difficult circumstances that he inherited. Thankfully, the BOT, Dr. Will and Coach Moore thought otherwise.

When Bama was down, 97-06, they had a few good years mixed in including an SEC champ, the fans continued to support the team. After they lost to a very good-great UGA team in 2002, the fans gave the team a standing ovation when they left the field. The team almost always played their hearts out, just as they do now. They are not robots as some characterize them. Ask any opposing coach or player how hard Bama plays.

As for Huntsville, AL about 50-50 split for people that grew up there between AU and UA.

I grew up in Decatur and I would have guessed closer to 80/20.

I moved away 15 years ago, I guess Auburn has gained a few fans in that time.
