Are the young guys so good more due to genetics, or more due to the fact they worked at it harder and smarter due to their Dad or family?

I think it's probably both, but of those 2 factors, what is it due more to?

And yes, there is also the fact that, sometimes, their supposed elite status is due more to the fact their Dad or other family were great players, but never mind that right now.

Genes are overrated. Khakis are where it’s at.

The Colquitt family of punters

The Matthews family with 9 NFL players is probably the most absurd.

You can't coach genetics.

I had a team mate in high school who was one of about 22 kids from a guy who played a few years in the NFL. My team mate was bad arse. Even with our shite S&C program, and him liking to get high and drink before practice, he made a C-USA roster as a walk on but was kicked off the team after 2 games when someone found a bottle of Crown in his locker.

Look at all the sob stories during the NFL draft about 1st round pick having a dad who was a gifted athlete but wasn't around because of whatever reason. Those guys are still getting their names called even without their dad coaching them in high school because they got killed in a drug deal gone bad when the kid was 8.

The hard work is the bigger factor of the two from what I've seen. Usually the offspring are able to avoid the pitfalls/train smarter than their parents, due to helpful advice from them.

It's been cool to watch A&M's RB Isaiah Spiller interacting with his dad, Fred. Fred played for TAMU under RC Slocum, and now his son is a starter

Marlon Humphrey comes to mind. His Dad Bobby was one the best RB's ever at Bama but blew it in the NFL by being an idiot.

If you're talking about D1 and professional aspirations, genetics is #1 hands down. But the access to training and knowledge that others don't have is also a big factor.

I mean if the genetics aren’t in place above a certain threshold, it doesn’t matter how hard they work. That goes for all elite athletes. Kids of elite athletes have way better odds of having the necessary physical traits.

Some of both. They get the genetics from their parents and then are fortunate to have someone that has been successful at the game basically coach them from birth. Alot of college and pro athletes marry other athletic people as well from what ive seen, so its not just the genes from the father, but both parents, that they get their athleticism from. Its definitely an advantage to be raised by a former athlete.
