Saban had already shown he could win at Michigan State. He showed he could win it all at LSU. And Bear had already shown he could win at Kentucky and A&M.

So ... neither.

Bama is jet fuel. They’ve always shown an unashamed willingness to both invest and interpret the rules a “rules”.

Bear is combining a jet plane with the highest quality fuel. Elite. Whenever it happens, it’s elite.

Meh - He was a pretty big unknown until LSU.

Bear used Bama to run shite, which he did.

Bear wrote the handbook on cheating at Alabama. Saban took it and perfected it.

Oh, so that's the only reason why Bear was 16-4 against LSU and why Saban is 12-5?

Alabama was already an established program when Bear got there, but Bear took it to the next level. It's both really. A great coach needs a great program, and a great program needs a coach. That's why coaches are always looking to advance to the bigger better programs.

Frank Thomas only won his titles at Bama

Wallace wade only won his title at Bama

Bryant only won his titles at Bama

Gene stallings only won his title at Bama

Saban had a title at LSU but look at his first 5 years at Bama vs his 5 at LSU.

People but will say but muh, the early 2000s and I will say see NCAA sanctions.

Hard to tell but every coach at Bama since Bryant has had at least one 10 win season

Alabama's Coach previous to Bear was 4-24-2 at Bama (3-18-1 SEC) - 3 years
Alabama's Coach previous to Saban was 26-23 at Bama (13-19 SEC) - 4 years *Including wins vacated

Is Alabama simply a better program than LSU at its foundation

Yes

did Alabama just get the two best CFB coaches ever?

Also yes

The two aren't mutually exclusive. Bama was the premier football program in the South long before Bryant coached there. There was a reason he played in Tuscaloosa.

Nick Saban created an unreal power creep at Alabama that allowed programs LSU and Auburn to win and compete for multiple titles.

If Nick Saban never comes to Alabama, more than likely, Auburn has found themselves in a Bowden situation and never gets Cam Newton. So many things have happened because of Saban’s chokehold on CFB early in the 2010s that I’d say it’s definitely him and not the school.

I think Alabama and LSU had more to do with making good coaches great than the reversal. That’s not to say they can win with average to poor coaches. Far from it, but programs like Alabama and LSU can make a good Coach look a lot better. Or maybe even average coaches can win there considering Coach O for LSU, and Gene Stallings at Alabama.

Alabama has had too many coaches win at consistently elite levels to say its just a lucky program with the best two coaches. Would Alabama be the best program of all time without Bryant and Saban? Of course not. But it could easily be on par historically with Ohio St, Oklahoma, or Texas without them.

Where Alabama got lucky is the timing of when Bryant and Saban arrived. Two critical time periods where the program had been down quite a while and resurrected at an elite level. Another couple terrible hires in the 60s and Bama could have become more like Minnesota or Ole Miss. 2 more terrible hires in the 2010’s and Bama could look a lot like Tennessee.

When Saban came to LSU, LSU was deep in the crapper. Not a secret. Bigger job for Saban to get lsu winning versus Bama

Saban did one very important thing, and that’s shut down the talent leaving the state.

Clearly location is important; some states will never win due to the lack of local talent. A quick look at national title winners will show the importance of location (state). Yet, coaches play a massive role in who within this southeast region can rise to the top. Why not Auburn consistently; why not South Carolina ever; why does Miami have more titles than Florida? At that point, provided the location is right, the coach is in place, you must look at the institutions and their broadly construed place in the college football landscape.

Saban knew what he had at LSU. Thats why he said it was his biggest regret in leaving.
